Concerned about my mum

My mum (63)  was diagnosed with COPD about six years ago, she suffers from asthma and is also a smoker - something we have tried to stop.    She had a chest infection recently and the doctor referred her for an X-ray as she was worse than usual and was coughing up blood (this has now stopped).   The X-ray picked up white spots and she was given a CT scan and then contacted with a consultant who spoke to her and is sending her for a biopsy and bronchoscopy (?).    This has all happened quickly (within four weeks).    The biopsy etc is next week.  Has anyone else had this experience and is it normal for the consultant to say if they see anything they may be able to tell her on the day?   My first thought is obviously the worst but am trying to stay optimistic.

  • Hello and welcome to the community. Sorry to hear about your Mum, but as things are moving fast, it seems as though she is being looked after. The thought of a cancer diagnosis can be scary, and not only affects the person, but has wide ranging effects on family and friends. She is in the system now, so you can look upon that as a positive. When somebody has a biopsy, it is unlikely they will be given results on the day. It has to be sent off for analysis which can take a couple of weeks. Could I point you to the Lung Group . Click the link to get there. If you post your concerns in the group, the members there with experience of this will give you a better idea of what to expect. You can start a new discussion in the group and it may be an idea to copy and paste your above post. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.
