My Mum has a terminal diagnosis. I don’t know where to go for help for her and for me if I’m honest. I don’t know what to expect, who I can get help from, what support I can get for my mum both emotionally and financially (she’s going to need her bathroom altered soon) etc etc??

  • Hi Harriet, u might find it useful to join the Family and friends group for support for yourself.

Re emotional/ financial help for your mum, try ringing the Helpline on 0808 808 0000.

A Community champion will probably get in touch soon to welcome u n give u more info. I'm just another member xx

  • Hi  and a warm welcome to the online community although I'm sorry you've had to find us.

A cancer diagnosis can cause a big upheaval both emotionally and financially for the whole family. I don't know whether you're going to be your mum's carer or not but if you are then can I recommend that you join the carers only group, which, as it's name suggests, is for carers only and is a safe and supportive place to discuss your worries.

If you are not your mum's carer then joining the supporting someone with incurable cancer group would also enable you to discuss your concerns as well as talk about practical issues. You might also find joining this group useful even if you join the carers group.

To join either or both of these groups just click on the links I've created and then choose 'join this group' on the pages that open. You can then post a question or introduce yourself after selecting 'start a discussion' and respond to existing posts by clicking on 'reply'.

If you could tell me what type of cancer your mum has I could also suggest an appropriate group to join where you can ask questions about ongoing treatment, etc.

You might like to take a look at this information on finding support groups in your area as Macmillan supports more than 900 independent groups and organisations across the UK. You could also pop into one of the information and support centres at any time where you could discuss your mum's finances.

Also available is the Macmillan Support Line where you can chat to one of the welfare rights advisors who can check to make sure that your mum isn't missing out on anything she's entitled to and also check if she's entitled to any alternative sources of support. You can call them free on 0808 808 0000 Monday to Friday from 8am to 8pm.

When you have a minute it would be really useful if could pop something about your mum's journey into your profile as it helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
