I’m 21 and I have a coloscopy coming up. I’ve been scared and dreading everything. My Pap smear came abnormal with low grade dyskaryosis CIN 1, my HPV 16/18 came back negative but 1 HPV came back positive what does this mean for me? I’ve been doing research online and all I see is cancer. What if they do a biopsy and find abnormal cells what happens?

The only reason I went to get a Pap smear and HPV testing done so early was because I had got genital warts.

please could someone help me understand a little better. I’m only 21.

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

It's perfectly normal to be scared about a procedure that you haven't had before. I haven't had this either so can I point you in the direction of the cervical cancer group. This isn't because I think you have cancer but because the ladies over there should be able to answer you questions and give you support.

To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'join this group' on the page that opens. You can then post your question after selecting 'start a discussion' and respond to existing post by clicking on 'reply'.

When you feel up to it, it would be really useful if could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

  • Hi , and a second welcome to the community from me. You said you've been doing some research, and you also said you've been scared and dreading everything. I wondered if you had come across the Macmillan information on colposcopy  it has a video on the same page with a patient and medic explaining the procedure and how worried people get but reassuring about the precancerous nature of things. I was hoping it might help clicking on the link and reading and watching the video as well as the support you might get in the group you've joined.

    Best wishes

    Take care KT
