Hi folks

I am looking a bit of advice my wife has been told she has cancer in her bowel, we are worried sick we have a scan on the 4th June follow by an appointment with the consultant on the 5th. I spoke with the consultant who suggested that my wife would have surgery on the 21st to remove the tumour. We don't know any more which is frightening. Lots of questions running through our heads has the cancer spread, what does the future hold. We have 2 young kids and my wife is currently of work and I expect her to of work so quite sometime lucky here company pays her full wages for 6 months.

My wife has critical illness insurance with AIG would anyone have any experience of claiming and does anyone know if they would be likely to payout cancer is covered in her policy but all types which confusing me as we have no experience of this at all.

Also should we be putting are cliam in now or should we be waiting until we see the consultant next week?

  • Hi and a warm welcome to the online community although I'm very sorry that you've had to find us.

It's completely natural to be very worried when you're first told about a cancer diagnosis but hopefully you'll both feel more in control when you know what the treatment plan will be.

Could I suggest that you join the bowel cancer group where you can ask questions, share experiences and get support from others with this type of cancer. You might also like to join the carers group which is a safe and supportive place to share your worries.

To join either or both of these groups just click on the links I've created and then choose 'join this group' on the pages that open. To ask a question or introduce yourself select 'start a discussion' and you can also respond to existing posts by clicking on 'reply'.

When you feel up to it, it would be really useful if could pop something about your wife's journey so far into your profile as it helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

As for your question about your wife's critical illness policy could I suggest that you post your question in ask a financial guide and you should get a reply within 2 working days. Alternatively, if you'd prefer to speak to someone, you could phone the Macmillan Support Line on 0808 808 0000 and speak to one of the advisors. It's free to call and they are available between 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday.
