Hi.

Just had Nephrostomy fitted and would like to hear from anybody who cruises for a holiday .

Would the medical staff be able to cope with all  eventuality in particular blockages or one of the tubes being dislodged

I would think it highly unlikely they would manage anything on board...you would probably be evacuated to shore

Hopefully you have arranged good Travel Insurance!

  • Welcome to the site .

I would think that this is a question to put directly to the Cruise Companies - get it from the horses mouth.

We do have lots of support groups that are Cancer specific and also ones that are general Cancer experience groups.

You could try our various Macmillan Support Line Services on 0808 808 00 00 to be very helpful covering Emotional Support and Practical Information. Clinical Information and Financial Support and Work Guidance mostly open 8.00 to 8.00 but check the link.

Travel Insurance is a big must for a cruise.

Hi Brian I agree with  it is highly unlikely that the cruise ship would have the necessary equipment to replace a dislodged tube as it needs a urologist and radiologist in attendance to guide the tube back in using x-ray equipment and  I doubt they would be able to help with a blockage but I don't know enough about medical services on a cruise ship to be 100% sure.

It's a difficult situation that may never happen and I can understand why you are asking it, however as I understand it providing you are careful with doing things and take care when bending, stretching etc. is is unlikely to happen. My first reaction was to contact the customer services office of the cruise company and ask them but this action may start ringing warning bells with the company as they could then be concerned that they may have to put into place evacuation procedures. I would have a word with your GP, Nurse and or hospital doctor and put the question to them and get their reaction to the question.

Sorry I can't be of much help to you but I do hope that you get your cruise and have an uneventful holiday.

I would mention in finishing to take more bags and supplies with you than you would need at home, whatever you use at home I would times by 3 and add a few more to be in the safe side obviously if you run out on the high seas supplies won't be easy to obtain.

    Best wishes
