Are we allowed to know what exactly was found - nodule on CT scan?

Hi there,

I had a CT scan on my lung a month ago.  Have a nodule in the right upper lobe.  Thats all I know apart from Doctor said he wasnt too concerned and I could have been born with it.

I had a clear CT scan almost two years ago so that discounts that theory.  He's ordered a repeat CT scan for the beginning of July.  I rang to find out what size nodule it was and whether it was smooth etc but was told they didnt have those details and even if they did they wouldnt tell me.    I have no idea why?  Surely it would be better to know? I couldnt get past the admin staff.

GP said not to worry as I am not a chain smoker and not coughing up blood.  I am breathless and have a different cough to my usual asthma cough.

From the moment my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer until the day she died, I knew at every step what she had, what they were going to do  etc. It gave me a feeling of control - yes I am weird. I like to know everything so I can evaluate things for myself.   Same with my father, from his inital tests for Prostate cancer right through until he was signed off to yearly PSA checks (woohoot).   My mother never smoked, my father did. I did for a few years as a teenager - quite a while ago.

I guess what I am rambling on about is am I allowed to know and if so, how do I find out?

I appreciate Macmillan so much.  My parents live in another country but still you guys helped me every step of the way. I feel guilty taking up your time when this could all be nothing.  But its bringing back unpleasant memories and I just want to feel some control (I sound like a control freak.)

  • Hi , sorry you have this worry and I am sure the docors would give you more information if they had it but it sounds like they have seen something on the CT - that is about the total of information a CT gives you and even then sometimes things might not be seen as significant and so does not get reported. The clear CT might just be down to a different radiographer interpretting the scan slighltly differently. One thing I know can change my breating can be down to a form of hayfever and can be quite different from year to year.

You are not at all wierd in wanting to know what things are, we can all relate to the issues of waiting for scans but probably the only other alternative would be a biopsy to sample the nodule and that could cause even more problems.

Thanks Steve :-)  Yeah dont want biopsys thanks - at least not if I can avoid them.

I really thought they would show something but what you said make sense as the nice lady I spoke to in CT scanning appointments said all the doc had commented was he wanted it repeated three months time.

    Take care and thanks again.
