I had my last chemotherapy in December 2018.I am still suffering with lack of saliva and tastebuds .could this be a permanent side effect of chemo or have others regained them in time ?

  • Hi and welcome to the online community

I've not had chemotherapy so looked up this information for you on chemotherapy side effects. You might like to take a look through to see if lack of saliva and tastebuds is listed.

You could also join our chemotherapy group and post your question there to see if any of the members of that group have had the same experience as you.

To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'join this group' on the page that opens. You can then post by choosing 'start a discussion'.

If you'd like to tell me what type of cancer you were being treated for I could also suggest an appropriate group for you to join where again the members will probably be able to help.

I hope everything gets back to normal soon.

  • Hi Jiver after my chemo finished it took a while for food and drinks to taste normal again but it did recover as for the dry mouth I had that too and for a while had a synthetic saliva spray on prescription which helped as it eased the dryness, speak to your gp they should be able to help.

    Hi I had breast cancer

  • Thanks for the extra information

You might like to join the breast cancer group as it's much busier than the chemotherapy group and I'm sure there'll be someone there who's had the same side effects as you and would be able to help.

When you have a minute it would be really useful if could pop something about your journey into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.

Thanks John.i have been prescribed synthetic saliva which doesn't help much .I have ulcers on my tongue due to my dry mouth .Gp said it was old age ! I'm 62 ! Just wanted reassuring that others have got taste back eventually

  • Hi,I would be surprised if it was old age causing the dry mouth, chat to your specialist nurse, they will understand, I think I used to suck mints or toffees to help, its a while ago now so the memory is a little vague. I would say see how you are at the 6 month mark and see what side effects are still troubling you, its one thing they never go in to detail about and just tell you you need time to recover. Posting in the breast cancer group may help to, I had NHL and 8 cycles of chemo back in 2009.
