Hi and welcome to the Online Community, although I am so sorry to see the circumstance that brought you here and so sorry to hear about the issues you are having.
I am Mike Thehighlander and I help out on the Community and I will do my best to direct you to the best place for you to find the support and help you need.
Constipation is one of the unfortunate side effect of treatment and remember this well from my years of treatment. I would always get in contact with your team and report the issues you are having as these folks are the best people to help out.
My cancer journey was rather different but if you follow this LINK it will take you to our various cancer specific forums where you will be able to connect with people who understand the journey you are on.
Have look through the groups and when you find a place you think you can get some support just join the group and hit the 'Start a Discussion' tab and introduce yourself to the group and remember to go to the right on the group home page and select how you want to receive email notifications when someone answers your posts.
You may also find our various Macmillan Support Line Services on 0808 808 00 00 to be helpful as you can talk to a friendly person that can help in lots of ways.
All the best.
Julie, a lot of folks will not hang around the New to Community Forum. Have a look at the link I have given you to the cancer specific forums and put up some posts as you will connect better with folks as this is a regular issue across all types of cancers ((hugs))
Hi
And welcome from me also to the online community I am sorry to read that you are disappointed that the only response you received so far is from Thehighlander who rightly has directed you to join other groups for support like
I note from your profile that you are on a 3 month trial drug and wonder if this could be the cause of your constipation if it only started once you started to take the drug in which case you should contact the consultant who prescribed it and inform him, you should refer to the box leaflet to see if this is a noted side effect of the drug. If you're on a drug trial for research you should also inform the person administering the trial and also keep a diary of any side effects you experience.
I hope you will join some of the specific groups and start to meet the friendly members who will be able to give you some support.
I should mention if you have been constipated for a number of days a call to NHS 111 would be adviseable and ask for advice even if it only gives you piece of mind or you give a call into your hospital and speak to someone there.
Sorry that I can't be of anymore help.
Ian
Hi Ian thank you for response I have called my hospital twice and both times they say use a laxative ; which I have done and yes I have a “ clear out” but then I’m straight back to square one it’s so painful I was just wondering if there was anymore advice from others who may have had same problem x

Hi Julie,
I am half way through 12 rounds of chemo for bowel and Ovarian cancer. One of my biggest challenges since my Chemo started in January is severe constipation. My Oncologist prescribed Movicol which did absolutely nothing I now self medicate for my constipation I take Senekot (from any chemist) and Andrews salts (from the chemist) I also drink prune juice. Sometimes I can be constipated for days and take a mixture of the above until my bowels move. It's uncomfortable and when my bowels move I have severe diarrhoea. My Oncologist said today "oh well its better to have diarrhoea. My stomach is sore but like you I strain badly sometimes and wonder if I'm doing more damage than good but my Oncologist doesn't seem concerned. It does take a few days to move it but like you Im back to square one afterwards. Hope you can find a solution soon and hope the above helps.
