Hi, i have been diagnosed with papillary cancer about a month ago, it’s been a whirlwind, I’ve had a total total thyroidectomy and neck dissection left side, everything went well with op,  just a some nerve damage which was repaired, However I caught an infection ended back in hospital doctors said it was gastroenteritis, my magnesium and calcium were low due to being sick so I was on a magnesium drip and a calcium drip, my blood showed my levels were back up, I’m on day 10 and my stomach still hasn’t settled, I’m so depressed and down, don’t what to do, I’ve tried everything to calm my stomach down, I’ve stopped the pain meds and the anti sickness tablets  dont work, I’m on levothyroxine and calcium tablets, could they be upsetting my stomach? I’ve got radiation to come yet and I’m terrified if my stomach doesn’t settle how am I gonna cope. Has anyone got any advice really appreciate it.

welcome to the online community, sorry you've had to come and find us

Are you still in hospital ?

The danger with any kind of vomiting or diarrhoea is dehydration, so it's important to stay hydrated and that can come from foods as well as water or drinks.

Dehydration also sneaks up on you, watch out for extreme lethargy.

What's your appetite like ? Can you eat fruit, like melon or mango or papaya ? Can you get yourself to M&S ? or order a food shop to bring it to you ?

I remember when my kids were teething and they had terrible stomachs but the GP said pack them with fruit, as much as you can, it will eventually settle. You're already experiencing minerals, salts and sugars imbalance and that needs to stabilise.

Are they checking your blood still ?

Wine gums, allegedly, help.  It's the gelling agent, I think, but beware of sorbitol as that can make things worse.

I'm sure someone said bananas help both the stomach and the mood, do you like bananas ?

    lots of questions, sorry

    hugs

    Carolyn

    Hi Carolyn,

Thank you for replying, yes I’m having lots of fruit and water, can’t stomach anything else, it’s just the nause and stomach cramps that are getting to me

I’m at home been discharged doctors say it’s just gonna take time to settle and yes I’m going for blood to make sure my magnesium and calcium are level.

Im trying lots of herbal remedies to help the stomach settle, hopefully it be soon.

  • Hi and a second welcome to the online community

I'm sorry to hear that you've been diagnosed with papillary cancer and that you've caught an infection after your surgery. It's no wonder that you're feeling down about all this and I wondered if you've told the team that are caring for you that you still have problems with your stomach?

Could I also suggest that you join the thyroid cancer group as there are some extremely knowledgeable people in that group who I'm sure will be able to make suggestions to help you.

To join just click on the link I've created and then choose 'join this group' on the page that opens. You could then copy and paste your introduction from here into a new post there after selecting 'start a discussion'.

When you have a minute it would be really useful if could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Edit Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
