Hi I'm new to this and I don't know if I'm in the right place to be asking! Has Anyone had a swelling on the neck that turned out to just be a cyst? I saw my GP on tuesday after being advised by my asthma nurse because of a lingering cough and cold and swelling on left side of neck. He referred me for a fasting blood test and chest x ray which I had both of yesterday and has referred me for a ultrasound on my neck he said I should get that in about 1 weeks time. When I asked what he thinks the swelling might be, he said it could be a cyst or it could be something sinister. He looked quite anxious which has in turn now made me feel anxious. Hospital said I should get my chest and blood results back mon/Tuesday and to make an appointment with my doctor to discuss them. Now I have a long weekend of trying not to go crazy. Thank you in advance!
Hi and welcome to the Online Community but sorry you see the need to find us.
I am Mike Thehighlander and I am dropping in past from our Lymphoma forums just to say that this question is often asked. I am happy to say that a very high percentage of folks come back and say tests/scan showed that it was not a problem.
Indeed I have a lump in my neck, now I have lived with my Lymphoma for over 20 years and I know that this is not a problem due to all the scans I have had over these years.
From my long experience the best way forward is to get all the tests done and deal with facts rather than guess work and let’s all look for this not to be a problem, but if it is we are around to help you out.
As you have not been diagnosed with cancer it’s best not to go into some of the forums as you will end up going down rabbit trails, but we are always around to listen and help out during these investigation times.
Hi Thank you for your reply, It is a releif to know that lots of people present with neck lumps that are nothing. I'm sorry you've had to deal with lymphoma for 20 years it must have been really hard. Sorry for the long post I can see what you mean about searching forrums as in early 2017 a couple of months after having my daughter, i noticed a unusual ulcer on the breast and searching through countless forums for answers just lead to unnecessary worry. I wasn't worried at first as my GP was confident it wasn't sinister, when it didn't subside after 10 months of different antibiotics and creams, I got a second opinion off a lady doctor who referred me by 2ww to a breast clinic and I started to panic even more. The oncoplstic surgeon was pretty confident it wasn't malignant but did an excisional biopsy anyway. It was more to find out what it actually was rather than find out if it was cancer so this lifted a lot of wait off my shoulders . Thankfully turned out to be a collection of skin keratosis, cells and an age spot and it was completely benign. I was then refered to a dermatologist who diagnosed me with Hidradentis superrativa which is so far thought to be a auto immune disease of the skin that usually presents with boil like lesions in the creases of the skin. Although mine appear as areas of raised bumps, boils and scabs that leave purple patches on my trunk, lower legs and arms. HS hasn't been researched a lot yet so i guess the neck lump could well be to do with a HS flare. I will try not to over think and just wait for the facts and in the meantime I will try to focus on everything else not on what the lump could be. Thanks again!
Hi, I don't want to be a bother so I won't go into detail.
Its been a long 6 months of getting to the bottom of the cause of The swollen lymph node in my neck. It has been being monitored with repeat scans. I've had 3 now I wasn't worried after the first 2 but at my most recent one I was refered to a ENT service who have refered me to a head and neck clinic to have it biopsied. And i feel a bit uneasy about the situation.
Thank you.
Hi again , so sorry to see that these investigations have went on so long. Unfortunately for some folks like yourself this just takes longer than it should, But from my experience being put to the best department to find answers it positive.
ENT/Head and Neck are the main places that folks presenting symptoms like yourself will be sent. I attended ENT/Head and Neck on a number of occasions as they are equipped to look for the answers.
A biopsy will give some clear answers, the results will take a few weeks to come back from pathology so keep this in mind.
Have they said what type of biopsy you are getting? I have had all the main biopsy types and they are not a big deal, it’s more the over thinking that you have to deal with.
I am deliberately not highlighting any of our specific cancer support groups at this point in time as this could well feed your anxiety as we don’t know if this actually is a cancer and what type.
Keep posting as we can walk this with you.
that's a possitive way for me to look at it, i am glad to be going to the right place because atleast I know I should be out of this confusing wait soon. It's definatley the over thinking that's got to me with it being so long especially. He just said they will either do a ultrasound guided biopsy or may take out the whole node.
it's reassuring to know I can come on here while I wait and just talk a little.
Thank you.
