Newly diagnosed - looking for tips and resources

Hello. I had breast lumpectomy and lymph node clearance over 6 months ago and have recently been diagnosed with lymphoedema in breast and upper arm. I’m waiting for a referral to lymphoedema clinic to come through and in the meantime doing everything I can to control it. So I’m wondering if anyone has tips / resources / helpful videos you can refer me to? I’m healthy, not overweight, exercise regularly, including weights. I’m particularly interested in information for people with lymph nodes clearance and build up of lymph below scar. I’ve done some manual drainage, but can’t find a video for the arm that has helped yet. Thanks for any help you can give.

  • Hi  I am sorry you are suffering from lymphoedema. I only had my sentinel nodes removed and haven’t had this experience. I am one of the community champions on the breast cancer forum and wondered if you would get more responses if you posted your question there, as it’s a busier forum,

  • Hi, I had a lumpectomy and lymph node clearance and developed lymphoedema in my arm and breast about a year after surgery. My wonderful lymphoedema nurses got it under control in 6 weeks with treatment. I have to wear a full length sleeve and glove every day and continue the exercises they gave me. Also have my arm raised with cushions if I am sitting down, watching tv etc. I was told to raise the arm and starting at the shoulder, use your other hand to brush lightly moving down the arm to the elbow, then the wrist, then the hand, always moving to the shoulder to help the lymph fluid move. I hope that makes sense!

My nurse said to think of a traffic jam on a motorway, it has to move from the front i.e. the shoulder first, not the hand or there is nowhere for the fluid to go. I hope this helps.
