Private care

Hi everyone,

I've been thinking of seeking a second opinion from a private specialist (probably Royal Marsden). There a couple of reasons for this, firstly my type of cancer is very rare and secondly I've now started a law suit against my current hospital for the care and misdiagnosis prior to my cancer.

I think my main hesitation is I have a set amount of funds for this and of course the travelling. Any advice gratefully received.

  • I have seeked second opinion from Royal Marsden before. They have a dedicated team for this. They are very efficient! I think you can have Video consultations too. You need to provide them your oncologist’s PA detail. They will request all the notes/ scans etc directly. They will let you know the cost and arrange finance beforehand. RM is very efficient and a well oiled machine.

I would just give them a ring and find out the details.

Christies at Manchester also a major cancer centre, the cost could be lower as it is not Chelsea price.

  • I tried to get a second opinion from Royal Marsden when I was advised to stop immunotherapy due to an adverse reaction. I particularly wanted someone with experience of PD-1 checkpoint inhibitors and wasn’t concerned whether they had experience of tnbc. My cancer isn’t particularly rare (about 4% of breast cancer, but this was a new treatment for this cancer, successfully used on other cancers. They said they didn’t have anyone with the combination of experience but could see a breast cancer oncologist if I wanted. So I would say take care to check the person has the experience you are looking for.
