Upsetting appointment with Oncologist

Just wanted to say I am sorry to hear this. I am glad the nurse was informative. I have to wonder sometimes about the communication skills of oncologist. To them we are just one more person in the queue outside. We of course deserve a proper explanation of what happens next. I am really sorry you are facing this.

But the lovely McMillans nurse phoned my wife today just to see how we were doing.

Hi Joroni, that is horrible to read. There is always more help available even if it is palliative. And the oncologist should be aware of a possible way forward. Probably no point complaining but good that Macmillan are helping. I hope you sort out your help and support network very soon so you can come back on here with more positive news. That is such a shocking consultation. I would definitely ask to be referred to the palliative care team and local hospice. I attended a 8 week living well program in my local hospice. They were lovely and the whole place is really calm and relaxing. 

I would also want to seek second opinion in a tertiary hospital. You can go private or ask your GP/ Oncologist to refer you. There is nothing to lose but getting more opinions. 

If you like, you could also let the oncologist know that you are interested in clinical trials and insist they write to other main oncology units to put you forward. Obviously not everyone wants to do clinical trials.

I am so sorry you have received this news. I agree with what Stella has suggested. I think the first point of call will be to speak to your gp about a hospice referral. Years ago the hospice was just the place you went to die, but it is not like that now. They are there to support you and make the rest of your life as comfortable as possible. I have been to my local hospice for physio. Also speak to your oncologist about medical trials. There are strict guidelines for trials, but there may be one that you match the criteria for. Unfortunately for trials, you have to ask them, they very rarely ask you. 

I am glad to hear that the MacMillan nurse followed up with a phone call, remember as well that yourself or your wife can phone the MacMillan support line for a chat if you feel like you need to on 0808 808 00 00.
