GP Phones Me to ask what incurable cancer is

Hey Guys

Here's a funny one for you.

I've been talking to the same GP at my practice for many months now about all my symptoms, escalations, referrals etc.  I always go to her because she knows what's going on and since the diagnosis we've got on really well.  But she is not my "assigned" GP.  I've checked that she sees the letters from all the consultants which are marked for my GP.   She does.  She suggested we could make a Special Request to change my assigned GP, but it wasn't a standard procedure.  Didn't seem worth it as it hadn't been a problem so far!

I have metastatic ccRCC.  It's spread to the periphery of my lungs.    You need this info to understand the joke that's coming!

Two days ago I get a phone call from my actual GP who I haven't spoken to since I was last ill - years ago!  He wants to know why the aim of the treatment is to control the cancer and not cure it.  *facepalm*    I mean, really?!    Hello?!  Metastatic?!

Suggested that I only want to talk to one GP about my cancer.  He's going to change my GP to the switched-on GP, who has had a handle on the issue for 4 months.

Perhaps I'm being a bit harsh . . . . .  and I haven't realised the extent of my learning in this area - credit to my urology consultant, oncology team and google.   But it's dead funny when the GP asks the patient what the standard treatment strategy is.   Going to apply for that job in the Edinburgh Cancer Centre now.  LOL

  • Good you are able to see the funny side but in reality it’s scary the way things are today. I went and had a face to face consultation with one practise doctor who examined me both externally and internally and told me the sample sent to lab was showing slight sign of blood and was probably my haemorrhoids.
He said I was fine and told me to go home and not worry. The tumour was in easy reach of finger examination as I was told on various occasions further down my journey road of cancer. Take care.

  • Well the only advise I've had from my GP ìs take what ever they offer you ! The last time I saw the practise nurse she was more concerned about having to work on her wedding anniversary. I have been told by one very nice doctor that some GPS are crap with cancer patients, I said and you work with them !!!! BUT MY Clattabridge nurses and oncologist, surgeon and District nurses and Macmillan have been very supportive and caring wonderful people . My gp can't understand how I'm so positive and just getting on with things !!!!! Moan over xx

  • It’s been 3 years but I’m learning to live, rather than just wait

  • You either have to laugh or cry!   You chose well.
