We all know how stressful waiting for scans and results can be. I've both my surgeons' and my oncologists' appointments through, and have had them for some time, but no appointment came for the scan, so I phoned up and - it hadn't been ordered. This is the second time this has happened after an oncology consultation. My cancer nurse immediately ordered it and e-mailed the consultant, but this delay may well mean that by the time it comes through, and the results afterwards, it may well be pointless seeing the oncologist on the allotted date as there will be nothing to discuss by then. Although I am only 3months + one week at the moment, I know from previous experience that the results take 2 weeks to come through and the scan appointment when it eventually comes through might be weeks in the future. I can see time stretching this out to 4 months +.
I expect there is a backlog for the scan people to work through, but any advice on how I can ensure getting checked out on time? Should I complain? Am I fussing unnecessarily? Has this happened to you? Rainie x
Hi KT, This is interesting. I never knew you could do this - you learn something every day on the forum! I can get onto 'Systemonline' from my GP website and can order repeat meds, see my blood test results, view letters sent to the GP from the hospital consultants etc. but have never had access to scan results, see hospital appointments or send messages to anybody else but the pharmacy.
I asked my surgeon about this, as I saw him this morning. He said that the hospital and my GP all use the same system, but he didn't know any more. maybe I have to sign up somewhere to get the scans on top of what I can already see? Thanks for that. Rainie x
Hey Patricia, The financial side of your system certainly involves a lot of jumping through hoops, even with insurance. Another added layer of stress, but of a different sort.
I'm the type that prefers to know everything. In fact I feel empowered when I've digested all the nuts and bolts of a treatment or a procedure. I have a need to understand it all, even complicated scientific aspects. I read all the research papers I can access - proper research I mean, not internet gossip. I find I can sit outside of myself whilst I'm taking it all in. It's personal, but somehow it's also distant and detached.
After reading what KT below posted, I'm going to look into what more I can access online.
All the best, Rainie x
Seems quite regional. My gp has ‘patient access’ which can make appts, order repeat prescriptions but this isn’t linked to the hospital, who don’t have anything like what you’ve found. I’m at St. George’s in south London which is part of Marsden so would’ve expected something but not. Glad you have it tho!
I just checked too. We don't have it in Norfolk, but I see it's there for Addenbrookes. I emailed my hospital to ask if they can send me the past, present and future scan reports. That would help. Glad somebody has it. Maybe they'll roll it out elsewhere over time. Rainie x
I've mainly lived in Sheffield since I came here from Timperley (South of Manchester) as a student in 1983.
I can access my coded GP record online, they use SystmOne. This doesn't include bloods and scans requested by the hospital though. They don't give me access to my full GP record online, which really annoys me as the practice I work for give patients access to their full GP record, well everything that is on the computer system.
I always ask for a copy of my scan results from the hospital, and every now and then I contact my liason nurse and ask her to send me all the letters that I haven't been copied into. I think I'm probably repeating myself here!
Remoh, I will let you know if I find out anything useful about Weston Park.
Best wishes everyone
Sarah
