Morning all,

I’ve not been on this forum for a while but do read your posts now and again. You are a such an inspirational bunch! Heart

Anyway, if you don’t mind sharing (even privately) I’m just wondering if any of you have claimed on your life insurance under the terminal illness section.

I was going to apply for this when I got diagnosed but decided to leave it for now as your Consultant  needs to confirm you have 12 months to live. I have been fighting stage 4 breast cancer for 2 years (with ups and downs) and I’m still stable which is great news. However, I was given a different prognosis every time I went at the beginning including 2-3 years (I don’t ask now just take it scan by scan). They just don’t know! I asked the McMillan nurse and she said some consultants may sign it off but others may not.

The policy expires in 2027 and it says you need to claim 18 months before it expires so I need to do this by the end of the year. I have took early medical retirement at 52 but want my partner to retire so we can have  at least a little retirement time together. Any advice would be appreciated. Many thanks xxHeart

  • Hi Sammyharry.  I have secondary breast cancer which is stable.  My oncologist signed off the form to say less than 12 months.  I was also speaking to another secondary cancer patient in the hospital and her oncologist would not sign the form.  It all depends on your oncologist.  My advice would be to go for it and ask him to sign the form.  In all honesty can then say that you will live for more than one year or less.  Good luck.

  • Hi Lee, thanks so much, this is really helpful. Sorry you’re also going through this as well but so happy you are stable too. Sounds like it’s a lottery depending on who gets the form and I see different consultants each time unfortunately. Confused Anyway, I’ll give it a go after my next scan in October. Obviously, I’d rather have more years than the money but it would make such a difference to our lives as even if I do really well, it’s very unlikely I’ll reach my partners retirement age. But, hopefully we have lots more holidays to look forward to. Blush Thanks again xx

  • Please can I ask if you go Clatterbridge or Christies? Your profile says you live in Liverpool so assume it’s one of those. I go to Christies. Xx

  • Hi Sammyharry,  I don't live in Liverpool or in that area, I was just born there and now live in the Midlands.  I do love that area though.  Like you said I would like to have many more years to enjoy holidays and life etc. We are going to Portugal on Saturday.   I know I will live longer than a year but asked the oncologist for the form as I wanted it to take medical retirement from work, I worked for DWP.  It does give me peace of mind to be a bit more financially stable and also know that my husband will be okay.  I would definitely say to do it and stand up for what you think is right because nobody else is going to do it.  We have to look out for ourselves which I know sounds selfish but we have to be. It sounds horrible seeing a different consultant each time.  I am so lucky that my oncologist is very understanding.  I really wish you luck and your cancer remains stable.

  • Oh sorry I’ve misread it. Yes, I love Liverpool too, we often go for a day out. Have an amazing holiday. I love Portugal! I’m going to Spain for a few days on Thursday with my sister and auntie, Blush Glad you’ve managed  to retire. I worked for the first 8 months after diagnosis in a stressful job reduced hours but it was the best thing I did retiring! I didn’t need the form to take early retirement but my GP had to say I won’t get better basically. Yes, wish I saw the same consultant and yes I do think it’s right that they should pay out . We want to make use of the money together and we’ve paid all our premiums. I’m hoping I get a few years but no one knows how their next treatments are going to pan out including the consultant. Best of luck and enjoy your hols. Thanks again. XxHeart
