Hi everyone so first Chemo done last week, side effects as expected for the first 3 days. Day 4 hit hard with dizziness spoke to helpline and yet again my anemia is back so off for transfusion today.

I'm going to try and make an appointment with the nutritionist as I have no appetite and the only things I want to eat are crisps. I did make a smoothie but sometimes it's just the thought of preparing food makes me feel sick. There's loads of healthy home cooked meals in my freezer but I just can't face it. Any suggestions friends.

  • Hi Sweetpea

Oh I remember those days ! The nausea is so hard to deal with but for me personally I treated it like pregnancy morning sickness even though that was many many moons ago, lolll x I found ginger helped, ginger biscuits ginger tea, I also had heighten smells too just like morning sickness!  So I tried to avoid “ smelly” foods as this made me feel more sick. To try and stimulate hunger I drank flavoured teas ( please keep on top of your fluids!) this also helped too. My routine was for first 3 days when on steroids and ravenous I ate lovely nutritious food then when sickness kicked in I nibbled on bits but kept fluid in take up , remember though this will pass ( the nausea) and hopefully you’ll start feeling a bit better x in the meantime if you only want crips pffttt just have crips! Not a nutritionist advice but mine lolll x good luck with everything and just keep on keeping on :o)

  • Hi Sweet21Pea, so sorry you have little appetite, Hnickkie has given some wonderful advice, your cancer unit should have a dietician, which your GP or CNS can access for you, I often have no appetite, no idea why or when it will happen, so when I'm eating ok I will make lots of small servings of soups, I  find broths the most palatable when my appetite disappears, I will defrost a couple in the fridge and should I feel like eating put a portion in a mug and 2 mins in the microwave and it's ready

Sweet21Pea, if you are tired, rest, it really knocks your appetite so be kind to yourself, if you don't feel like eating for a couple of days, and crisps is all you fancy, that's ok, you can easily make this up when your appetite is back, but as Hnickkie has said please make sure you drink enough, take care.

  • Hi Sweet21Pea Well done one down . It can knock you for ten and is normal to feel that way . Presume you got your  anti sick tablets . Try and imagine food and drink as part of your daily medicine might help . This time will pass stay strong . All the Best Minmax

  • Hi Sweetpea,

I hope your first chemo is your worst chemo and from now on everything will get better! When I feel sick, I tend to eat snack things like toast or clear soup. Just a little but often and of course as Eddie & Hinckley have said the main thing is fluid and lots of it. Eat anything you feel like whether it is healthy or not and remember this is a temporary situation so it won't do you any harm. I usually like hot drinks but when nauseous I prefer cold drinks. Even lemonade with a scoop of vanilla ice cream to give me a taste in my mouth and it doesn't smell of anything.

Let's hope the worst is over! Good luck!

    Love Annette x
