Hi everyone

A couple of years ago we used to have a great interest in crafts that members did but it seems to have fizzled out, there was quite a bit of knitting and crocheting that the ladies used to show on the site. Don't worry men, you can do some too, it's definitely not just for ladies.

I vaguely remember that when I was around the ages of 4 to 10 years old, so that's almost 60 years ago, my mum showed me how to knit a few items and it doesn't stop there, I can remember that I was fond of little rug making kits. I made a little bedside rug by following instructions and in the mornings when I got out of bed my cold feet landed on a cosy woollen rug. Those kits were very common, anyone remember them? Maybe they're still around, anyone seen them lately? Wool shops, as we called them in Belfast, were plentiful in every town and city.

I haven't made any woollen items but I have been working with wood a little. For my wife's last birthday in May I made her a little easel as she likes to paint now and then. This is it

For Christmas past, I made a few little bird feeders for some close family members, you pull the cork out at the top and fill with nuts or whatever. My wife did the paintwork, I was a little worried thatGrinning she used grey wood preservative because I thought that made them look like a pigeon and small birds are afraid of pigeons but to my delight little birds were abundant and soon scoffed the lot! We Grinningdon't have any squirrels in this area unfortunately although I have seen the occasional one a mile or so away. Hopefully they'll come to the little wood of 1500 willow trees I planted in the field oppoGrinningsite. Willow trees are great for attracting wildlife, I was told. The photo below is of one of the birds that I kept for myself Grinning

So let's get making folks, it's a wonderful activity and let's see what you've done/what you make.

  • Hi Salis

Every time I'm in the garden a wee robin appears and flits around near me. It's good company on a cold day. I always talk to it and hold out my hand but without food, it's not going to come to me. I managed to get a photo a few weeks ago. I wouldn't have thought it but the robin loves to feed from the bird feeder I made.

  • Hi everyone

The leaves do look like eucalyptus, they're a blue green colour and round when young growing to long and oval when older. It's mainly native to Australia and there are more than 700 species.

I have a eucalyptus tree at the back of my house that we bought around 20 years ago. I wouldn't advise anyone to buy one as they're such fast growers. I'm not kidding when I say it's over 100 ft tall and luckily for me it's leaning away from the house. It's massive, needs to be sold with a warning and should be grown in parkland or a very large garden, a couple of acres at least. It's evergreen and the bark peels off in sizable strips, a lovely tree. I'll put a photo in later, it's just after 4am now, quite dark!

Take care and stay safe everyone

Looking forward to seeing that tvman - maybe we can have your v-bar nearby in the summer???

  • We have got one five yards from our conservatory. Have to have it severely pruned every year but puts on three feet for every six inches you cut off!

It came in a hanging basket about four inches high, now thirty feet!

No koalas in it yet though!
