2nd January. I was trying to keep my spirits up this morning by assessing what is looking good in my garden. I have variegated golden and green shrubs which always look sunny even when its dull. Some red cornus stems though they need some light to bring out the colour.
Several plants are still holding their coloured autumn leaves. A container has two very lush clumps of diascia foliage. Cant believe it has survived the frosts.
Primroses are in flower in a few places and the winter heathers are beginning to colour up. Outside my front door is a variegated holly with lots of berries, surprised the birds haven't taken those.
But no blue sky - there was a glimpse earlier but it's gone now. I have two nice winter gardens near me at Mottisfont and Hilliers Arboretum which have influenced my choice of plants over the years. Used to be favourite visits to cheer me up this time of year but both seem too daunting to attempt now.

Your garden looks great! Looks like all your hard work was productive. I liked your raised beds they are so good for keeping out the weeds and easier to garden.
Looks like all your hard work was productive. Your strawberries are amazing.
Spring and summer are so wonderful for gardening.
Stay safe and be well.
I have enclosed a photos of my Kauai garden that were promised some time ago.
Oh Wow, ! Just wow! Is that George?
I can almost smell the sweetness and feel the juice running down my chin and onto the floor from here. Exactly how delicious were these fruits?

Hi Wow, I wish that was my back garden, everything looks delicious and I can imagine the smell of the fruit!
I do remember, it seems like a long time ago, you did say you would send photos! Thanks!
How are you doing?

Hi Millie
With your photos of beautiful tropical fruits, you have lifted my spirits, and I guess the other members of the community will say this same. I'm sure you'll miss that aspect.
Beautiful.

Hi Friends
Site is up and running again, I was really wanting to show you this Dicentra, or its common name is Bleeding Heart and you can see why when you look at its beautiful little flowers. Enjoy.
This clematis (one of about 6 in various parts of the garden) is flowering profusely against a trellis to the right of my garage door. I usually cut it down in the winter to about 6 inches off the ground, which concerns my wife but it ALWAYS grows back. I forgot this past winter which is why it's hanging over!
See you soon

You do have some lovely specimens, tvman. The bleeding heart is gorgeous.
I was out “working” in my garden the day before yesterday. I have put inverted commas because it was such a short spell. But it was a start. My sister and I planted out sunflower seedlings and cleated a few weeds.
Today I spotted a large patch of ajuga that has suddenly turned dark blue, sending up spikes of flowers. It will be buzzing with bees. More poppies have opened. In my front garden the tulips have given way to purple balls of alium which, in turn, are flowering alongside some California poppies in the most vibrant yellow/orange it’s possible to imagine. It looks so jolly it makes everyone smile. One of my neighbours told me that last year, she was at an art class and the assignment was to paint happiness or joy, I forget which. She painted my California poppies poking through my garden fence.

Hi Daloni
Some days I won't do an awful lot in my garden either especially on a day after I have been using a power tool or sawing which is an incredibly small amount of work compared to what I used to do. On such days I'm happy (and my wife is happy also for me) to tie in some wayward shoots of clematis, jasmine or honeysuckle. I didn't do much today apart from dig a hole for a post. It's one two holes required to sink posts in to attach wire between in order to tie in raspberry canes.
I must admit that I had to look up "ajuga", I don't have any but it's not possible to have everything or know everything in the world of gardening! Every day is a school day. It looks to be a lovely plant but aren't they all when they are in bloom?
I have four young sunflower plants in my greenhouse that are already over a foot tall. They're from a packet that claims to be gigantic sunflowers, but we'll see. So far so good.
Whatever you do today Daloni, enjoy what you do and stay at home, stay out of hospital. That's an order!
Take care and stay safe.
