2nd January. I was trying to keep my spirits up this morning by assessing what is looking good in my garden. I have variegated golden and green shrubs which always look sunny even when its dull. Some red cornus stems though they need some light to bring out the colour.
Several plants are still holding their coloured autumn leaves. A container has two very lush clumps of diascia foliage. Cant believe it has survived the frosts.
Primroses are in flower in a few places and the winter heathers are beginning to colour up. Outside my front door is a variegated holly with lots of berries, surprised the birds haven't taken those.
But no blue sky - there was a glimpse earlier but it's gone now. I have two nice winter gardens near me at Mottisfont and Hilliers Arboretum which have influenced my choice of plants over the years. Used to be favourite visits to cheer me up this time of year but both seem too daunting to attempt now.

Hi Tamencio
I'm sure you are cherishing those gifts and of course there is still a little bit of him with you both. It's a wonderful memory to have.
I have a couple of sweet cherry trees, variety Stella. The birds absolutely love the the bright red cherries, they take much more than we do, they strip the trees of the cherries in a day or two. I also have a couple of pear trees, another two apple trees and a couple of plum trees too. They're all in bloom right now, a mass of pink and white.

FINALLY one of my plants I ordered at the start of April has arrived! Apparently there's another one from this company now in the post as well, and from another company my whole order it seems. So 2 more plants and 2 sets of corms I think! Exciting!
So my first sweet pea flower is almost open!
My wisteria is getting bigger and bushier every day, it even has a climber at the back!
Some wild flower seeds in bloom
The broom is smelling fabulous, just in time for the lilac fading, and it reminds me of the walks in Scotland we did every Sunday in the hills!
Then there's the newbies, waiting to head out into the death bed - hopefully not to die! lol

Flowerlady,
I can confirm that it is exhausting! Fun? Not just right now, every bone in my body is sore. By tomorrow lunchtime I might be able to walk without pain
I have made (along with my wife) all the beds except the smallest one planned, I'm running low on compost just for topping up. It's to be 2ft 3in wide, 5 ft long and 2-3ft deep. So nearly there.
The bottom photo shows one bed which is 10 ft long 2ft 3in wide and 3 ft deep.
On the left are onions, centre are shallots and to the right are garlic. You'll be able to work out which leaves are what from the above description.
The photo below is my strawberry bed. Keep busy and happy Flowerlady.
Take care and stay safe Flowerlady

Hi Lass, They look great. This is the first year for a while, I haven't grown sweet peas and I think it's too late now! Your new plants look sturdy, I love the look of the one in your last photo, what's it called please? It looks as if it might survive the high winds we have here, what do you think?
