Well, we're getting into that time of year when gardens need a bit more TLC than they've had over the last few months. So I figured it was time for a new thread for the year.
Before Christmas an AMAZING friend paid for me to finally get a fence built round my back yard. This means it is now secure and I can make the kitchen garden I've always wanted! It's all very exciting for me! So I've bought compost, planters, canes, food, and seeds! Then I spotted some little plants, and bought 2 of them too.
So I've just been outside and planted up the 2 plants that arrived - a normal high yield blueberry, and a pink blueberry that apparently has a different taste to it. I've also got some black raspberry seeds soaking, as they need soaked for 24 hours then put in the fridge for 2 months, before being grown, then planted outside a couple of months later. I've then got 10 types of herb, and 30 types of veg to plant out through the year too.
Not tried growing veg before, so it's all new and a massive learning experience for me. But I'm looking forward to it, and it gives me a reason to go outside, as well as a nice space to go outside to!
Anyone else got anything new going on in their gardens this year?

So before drinking today's "Jug of Joy" (a litre of laxatives), I thought I'd go on a caterpillar cull in the garden as the blighters have been running rampant this week. Very pleased to see lots of tomato and tomatillo flowers blooming, squash and cucumber flowers dying and swellings beginning, and so much more. But my fave discovery today, my baby cauli!
This is the rest of the garden as a whole....
I'm excited for more edibles! Been munching away on Saskatoons, strawberries, and salad leaves so far! Omnomnom!

Yeh, all of mine are in pots because this is rented and the back is all paving slabs. So only option. Lol
I'm wondering the same thing tbh. Lol. I think I have a bee problem though in that they aren't used to flowers being anywhere in this area. Lol. So some of my veg flowers don't look to have been pollinated. Some have though as there are definite swellings on the pumpkins, squash, etc plants in the bottom of my giant strawberry pot.
I'm just hoping that I staggered the planting enough that things will be ready at different times so I'm not inundated all at once.
Today I picked my first carrots too! Very exciting!
Have you managed to pick anything yet kirky?

Hi, love seeing your container garden. We rented in Kent when first married, row house , 2 up 2 down and no garden. A country girl, I could not do without a kitchen garden so did much as you do now. I remember vividly how hungrily (both in a kind of spiritual and the bodily sense) I anticipated the growth in those pots! I have hand pollinated in the past when bees seemed scarce. We have many pollinators these days and many are honeybees as a regional apiary brings in their bees for the clover. Happy gardening!
The neighbours brought us fresh peas about a week ago. What a treat. I used to like to eat them fresh from the pod and did eat a podful this time.
Gooseberries! I love gooseberry pie and jam. There were gooseberries here but disappeared while the house and garden were let, so no more. Your post has inspired me to go investigate the jam supply at the Hall. The local women sell jams, jellies and conserves to raise funds. Maybe some gooseberry. I hope not to be disappointed; my mouth waters.
That is an impressive array Lass. I have two tomato plants and a strawberry
It's very exciting when the fruit appears. The baby Cauliflower is a work of art!

Hello TVMAN!
I need to learn to go to the next page and read the rest of the postings! I enjoy hearing from you too. It is night, so no way to pictures, but tomorrow I'll start working on it. I have ripe papaya now, mangos are in season, but from friends since I am too near the water. I should have passion fruit this year, started the plant from a 4inch cutting about 2 years ago, I'll take a photo soon so you can see it. Pineapple is starting to grow also. I keep the coconut trees harvested, it is deadly to walk under one that is loaded with coconuts. Have not put time into the garden this season, the last year has been difficult and I have been a bit low on energy..
But things are getting better, my visit to UCSF was highly successful. Good bloods and scans -who can ask for more. As to the costs, they are high. Yes, I have good medical insurance, otherwise my treatment would not be the same nor as successful. On the plus side of paying through the nose for the insurance is that it is not as difficult to get the appointments. I still fight with some of my doctors about treatment and doses since I believe in targeted therapy not in Chemo, and they listen to me. I am lucky in so many ways.
I am returning to San Francisco in early August to give a talk to some children, and then my daughter and I are going on a cruise of the Baltic for 14 days, should be fun. I am looking forward to having time with her. A good side effect of cancer is that I can eat as much as I want- I always ask the question: what is good about what's happening now. 14 days of eating anything that I what and I do not have to shop or cook! That is what's good.
I do enjoy the gardening parts of these posts.Love growing plants and seeing all of your plants so far away. Actually wish I were closer some times and I would go to a meet up to see the folks I post with.
TVMAN, thanks for the post, I follow you all the time and enjoy your wisdom.
Actually I enjoy all you guys Daloni, Button, Lass and rest of the gang. You guys keep me happy.
I'll try and post later this week with my photos.
Hugs to all,
Millie
Ms Lin, did you manage to source some jam? I do hope so!
I've been a bit lapse in posting here, keeping things up to date with how it's all going. But I just picked my first tomatoes and a cucumber today! Looking at my two cucumber plants, I think I may be looking for homes for cucumbers or recipes for cucumbers much as I did with the avocados! Lol.
So here are todays offerings.....
And then I'm going to post the link to my FB folder that has everything else in it. Oh! I HAVE SOME TOMATILLOS GROWING! I'm just a little excited by this fact..... Lol
Hopefully that works!
How is everyone else's gardens going? Anything exciting happening, this includes just sitting out enjoying the weather and the garden!
