Hi there,

I am really glad to have found this forum. I wondered if anyone can guide me on how to help my Dad set up some home care in Tarragona in Spain.

He was diagnosed with advanced adenocarcinoma lung cancer  (gone into his bones) in January. He's had 3 rounds of chemotherapy which they felt helped a bit and they're now trying him on 3 rounds (3 weekly) immunotherapy. He's having bad side effects and lots of pain. He's on 75mc of Fentanyl patches and other self-administration oramorph if needed. His partner is great but they've not been together that long and she's asking me and my sister to help. We are finding it hard as we dont speak much Spanish and Dad's is getting worse with all the pain and drugs! We want him to come back to UK but don't feel he feels ready for this yet.

He wants to try and get some care and home- either live in or coming in 3 times a day as when he has bad days he can't get out of bed.

I don't know how best to help him from the UK so any guidance on care over there / getting him back here would be great. Thank you for having this forum available - it's been good to read some of the threads.

  • Hi  and welcome to the online community although I'm sorry that you've had to find us.

Although I don't live in Spain I noticed that your post had gone unanswered. I guess this is because no one else in this group has any knowledge of how to go about arranging home care in Spain. I did try using the search facility on this page to look for other members who lived in Spain but drew a blank I'm afraid.

You don't say whether your dad's partner is Spanish but I presume she's not otherwise I guess she would know how to access the care he requires. Does your dad have any Spanish friends who would be able to find this out for him?

As for how to get him back to the UK, could I suggest that you give the Macmillan Support Line a call on 0808 808 0000. It's free to call and available between 8am and 8pm every day. Although they won't be able to tell you how to arrange care for your dad in Spain they should be able to tell you what you need to do to arrange for him to get care in the UK if he decides he wants to come back.

Wishing you and your dad all the best

    Hi there.

Thank you very much. My Dad's partner is in fact Catalan but she hasn't proved all that helpful in knowing where to look yet! I think it's because they've never had to do it and there is very little home care there as she said usually family do it. They've not been together long enough for her to take it on.

My Dad has a Spanish speaking friend visiting now so I hope they can help. I hope a nurse he knows there too can.

Thanks again for replying. Best wishes to you.

    Hello

You could try this link to Cudeca, they are a charity here in Spain https://www.cudeca.org/en/

    or here https://www.aecc.es/eu?destination=/en/home&_exception_statuscode=403

The first is and English run organsiation, the second Spanish, but with the partner being Catalan that should not be an issue.

I do hope you find some help here, it can be a bit daunting as I know after the last year... any way take care

    x

Hi I just thought I'd post some things I've discovered in case other people do what I did and try to find info about support and cancer care in Cataluna.

gipss.cat/.../ if your loved one needs palliative support and care at home, their treatment team should refer them into PADES  (holistic team of specialist doctor, 2 nurses and social worker). They should come to assess things at home and offer visits as often or little as needed.... We're still waiting for them to visit after a week.

It's also taken me ages to discover that the hospital here in Tarragona has an interpreter who you can request in appointments when you arrive at the hospital. I found this out through a service called global medical care.

Care is being set up through a team linked to the hospital / social care. All this has only been possible by my Dad ending up in hospital for 5 days due to difficulties managing pain.

Just hope it might make someone else's search a bit easier than mine in the future.

    Best wishes,
