Colostomy reversal pros and cons

Hi all,

I've had my colostomy now for 16 months and the crc nurse has suggested I discuss reversal with my surgeon.  I'd like to be as well informed as I can before making a decision.  I have read lots of stories here about ileostomy reversals and those who have had rectal cancer but I'm not sure if the post reversal issues are likely to ve the same for a colostomy? It was suggested I'll need a 2 stage op- one to reconnect the existing stoma, and getting another stoma on the other side while the previous one recovers, then another op to reconnect the new stoma.

What worries me:

1. Wearing incontinence pads- for how long???

2. Always Needing to be near a toilet

Prospect of Lars- I don't think I'll handle that well

Honest opinions please about long term prospects.

While I don't really like the bag, I've got used to it  I can cope with it, I don't get leaks or get into a mess. At worst it can be a bit noisy and occasionally smelly.

  • Hi

My colostomy is permanent so reversal isn’t possible for me but it will be interesting to see if others can reply with their experience of colostomy reversal-I’m not sure I’ve come across this before, as most discussions focus around ileostomy reversal in the group.

It must be a difficult decision for you to make, and a very personal one if it’s an option but not something that has to happen. It’s good you are coping well with your stoma and it’s a lot for you to go through more surgery but maybe you feel you could cope and it’s more important for you to have the stoma reversed. What a dilemma for you.
