Abdominal pain post ileostomy reversal

I had a temporary ileostomy for 15mths, reversed in Feb 2025. Since the reversal I’ve experienced 4 incidents of intense cramps in the upper centre of my abdomen, about 3 fingers above my tummy button. This can last for a couple of hours. I mentioned the first 2 incidents to the surgeon at my post-op checks at 9wks and was advised to walk regularly and drink plenty of water, which I was doing anyway! I’ve also tried gentle massage and heat packs. My diet is including more fibre too. Any suggestions please??

  • Hi

I haven’t had this type of surgery so unfortunately I can’t help, but I hope that others who have had the reversal done will come along and post if they’ve had something similar happen.

  • Hi there I experienced pain sometimes after my reversal but it was directly behind the stoma site I thought it was wind built up so took buscopan which helped .

  • Hi AlbaH

I  found that I had to be careful with my diet early days. When I had discomfort I massaged the area kept it warm  and did pelvic floor which I did morning and night if able

My food was prone to stick around the wound area so I stayed on low fibre little and often.
It settles and hopefully you’ll have less discomfort as things settle

    Best wishes

  • Thanks for your reply, I’ve gone back to the low fibre diet and smaller portions again… hoping it will settle Pray

  • Thanks, I can’t pinpoint what has caused it so I’m back on low fibre and smaller portions again Pray
