Hi I am just looking for any advice or trying to see if anyone has experienced anything similar .

my dad had 12 inches of colon removed June 2021 - hasn’t got on with stoma at all. Desperately wanted reversal .

Went ahead on Tuesday, surgeon said went great will be home in a few days , he was coping with just paracetamol as when had surgery last year everything went great but when he had opiate based pain relief as he was in agony his bowel went to sleep and he was very unwell.

When he was in recovery he was given an egg sandwich which he ate , then yesterday ate mince and potatoes, he was very sick last night , he was in agony today , very low blood pressure , has blood clots in leg - was very healthy fit and string prior this .
He has been given anti sickness meds today but can’t eat . He’s not antibiotics, I worry he should as a precaution etc -

Hes very weak and fed up , deteriorated so much from yesterday , is able to drink . Had had some gas but no movement . Due to the bank holidays and then the weekend - there doesn’t seem to be any/ many doctors / surgeon / specialists, the hospital he is in has a terrible reputation.

I just wondered if anyone has any information/ knowledge that may help me help my lovely Dad . Pray

I’m sorry to hear about your father’s post op problems. Ileus, as the sleeping bowel is called, is quite common. It was my own experience each time the bowel was disturbed. And it can take time to go. I’d suggest sips of water and see if your dad can be supported by IV nutrition. There’s no point in food going in when there’s no way out - very distressing. One way to encourage the bowel is a glycerol suppository. So please be patient - it can take some time for the bowel to get back to work but stick to liquids until it does.

    Every blessing
