My stoma shrank and my stomach expanded after 9 months of doing OK with Convatec Natura convex 2 piece and I became very sore. I have spent the last 6 months trying to find a product that will stay secure for more than 1 or 2 days, including Convatec mouldable and Dansac Novalife TRE convex 2 piece. I have tried 1 piece convex pouches, mouldable seals barrier sprays, melamine lotion and pastes. I am about to try the Coloplast Sensura Mio convex 2 piece as my last hope. I would like to try another Convatec product but they are not sending samples out at present. Does anyone have any advice (yes I'm sure losing weight would help!).
Hi Catgirl2, Sorry to see you are having a problem especially after it all seemed to go so well! All I can tell you is that for the year I had an ileostomy I used Salts BE confidence bags but because I had a hernia and a bit of a dip on one edge of the stoma I also used barrier spray (Protect) and, Coloplast seals which I found good. Salts also comes in convex but I didn't need them.
I never tried them for more than 2 days and mostly changed daily as a routine.
Might be worth getting some Salts samples.
Hope you find a solution, All the best, John
Thank you John. I haven't tried Salts yet so will bear that in mind.
Hi Catgirl2. I also used the Salts Confidence with Aloe Vera and my friend has recently changed onto them and loves them. How often do you change your bag? I was advised to do it every other day and to hold my hand over the seal area once applied as it warms the adhesive and gives a better seal x
Thanks Kareno62.
With the Convatec Natura 2 piece convex I changed the flange every 4 days, which was great. The Coloplast Sensura mio Soft convex looks promising but my stoma nurse thinksthe Deep convex might be my best bet, so will be trying that next. I am quietly hopeful!
Hi Catgirl2
Sorry to hear you’re having problems, it’s so demoralising isn’t it.
After my surgery in January this year I used Coloplast Sensura Mio Light convex 2 piece with a belt which worked very well for around the first 8 weeks, then I started having many leaks. I tried a number of different bags and none worked and my stoma nurses weren’t much help to be honest. However, after posting on Macmillan and receiving some information from John (Crankshaft), I have found a solution that now works very well for me.
I use the Coloplast Sensura Mio Light convex with a belt, Coloplast Brava skin barrier spray and Salts Aloe Rings (Ref: SAR25). I have used this combination for 4 months now and the only leak I’ve had was when the stoma nurse changed my bag at a review (I don’t think she didn’t take the time to put everything on properly).
I make absolutely sure the barrier spray is completely dry before attaching the ring which I warm first then spend about a minute pressing it to my skin by running my finger around it. I then attach the bag (again after warming the seal) and spend another minute pressing the seal before attaching the belt.
Earlier on as an experiment I left the bag on to see how long it would go without leaking, after 5 days it still hadn’t leaked, but I changed it anyway.
Hope you find a solution that works well for you.
Best Wishes, Net77x
Thanks Net77
I was doing ok with the Coloplast Sensura Mio Light convex after 2 samples, then I saw the stoma nurse and she thought I would probably do better with the deep convex because my stoma is in quite a deep crater. I'm trying those now and fingers crossed think I will stick with them.
I always used to use the mouldable seals with Convatec Natura, but now my stoma is much flatter and the nurse thought that I'd do better without. I haven't ruled them out completely but what she said was logical. I'm also trying the belt, the Brava barrier spray and Brava paste to fill in the dips.
There is alot to like about the Sensura Mio pouches such as the nice material, but some annoying things too, such as the extra flap at the outlet and the large filter which means the Osto-ezee vent has to go at the back instead of the front. I have managed to keep a flange on for 4 days once but think 3 will be more usual for me.
Thank you so much for sharing your tips.
