Hi im new here, my mum has stage 4 bowel cancer and has just had two surgerys in a 5 week period and now has two stomas very close together on her right hand side.
The nurses seem to be having difficulty getting the bags to seal properly (because of close location). Has anyone else had this problem or have any tips ?
Thank you in advance.
Yes TB123, I had the same problems to start with when using the Sensa Mio pouches and lost confidence and self-esteem. However, my stoma nurse was brilliant when I flagged the problem to her. First, she shaved the area around my stoma then used a Fusion stick to prime the area of skin before applying the Sensa Mio pouch. It is important to make sure that the hard ring within the pouch is pressed against the skin to ensure full contact and the petal shape flange is smoothed without creasing. I also run my thumb around the rim of the cut out before applying to give the cut edge a small 'lift' to enhance contact. When in place I apply a pair of Brava elastic tapes and this makes an excellent seal that looks and feels right and has never let me down in the past 9 months. When changing the pouch it is clear to see that no leaks have started to creep past the ring, which is reassuring. Before, I never left home without carrying a pack of spare pouches, wipes and all the rest of it. Now, I only do this if travelling away from home or attending a medical appointment in case the pouch has to be removed for clinical purposes. I keep a good quality disposable razor in my kit bag now. It takes me about 15 minutes to clean and change two stomas, start to finish, in a methodical fashion every 48 hours.
Each to their own of course and there are many products out there to suit a variety of personal preferences and circumstances. We all need peace of mind without a doubt and whatever means are employed to achieve this then so be it.

Thank you so much for the tips i do know from manufacturing experience that to get a product to market costs thousands, so i guessed i was doing something wrong, in my opinion the product is extremely well made.
During the day i did rinse out a few times and kept checking the seals, so not sure what i did wrong maybe will try again a have a few samples left. The hollister 56900 have never given me the slightest cause of concern as provided when i left hospital, but with hernia i was looking for something specific for that, thank you again i will into the Fusion stick etc.
All the best

Glad to help. I agree that the product is very well made (and simple to use) and there is a lot of formal advice out there but it takes a while to find it online, as it isn't all in one place. From my experience with the Sensura Mio, the key is to press the concealed ring against one's skin, together with the annulus between the ring and the stoma, and work outwards from the centre. I use only water to refresh the area around the stoma, followed by a SALTS adhesive remover wipe - which evaporates in seconds. Then the Fusion applicator, which leaves the skin tacky and improves the adhesive bond with the Mio plate. Finally, the Brava elastic tapes really do the trick in terms of an excellent seal. The clue there is that I have to use SALTS spray to start to remove the tapes and pouch when due for a change as it remains well-bonded. I agree with you regarding the tendency for waste to start to escape then get worse, but since doing the above sequence I have not had a problem (but I touch wood as I write!!
Best Wishes
