Long Haul Travel with Stomas?

Just wondered if anyone had done any long haul travel with stomas? I have a colostomy and urostomy and up to now have only done short haul flights to Majorca and Lanzarote.

This week, I’m attempting something much longer and hoping all will be ok! My colostomy can play up when I’m stressed and I am feeling a bit anxious about the long journey already!

  • Hi

I’m just back from very short Dublin flight and was stopped both ways. Searched once. She knew when I said as I think the products hand luggage showed up on their scanner. No problems respectful and understanding.

We can’t let these stoma’s dictate. I keep thinking of Sarah’s advice.
No one is going to know you or remember you anyway even if there’s a leak or search.

I was more peeved because Dublins security took so long it was extremely busy. Nothing to do with my Whoopi they were all stressed and running around like headless chickens.

  • Hi Ann

Hope you had a great time, especially being able to see your grandchildren again! I’m always searched, but it’s fine. Not sure if it’s because I am usually in a wheelchair, but it doesn’t bother me.

  • Thanks Sarah. I had a wonderful time. They’ve grown so much and are great fun

I wasn’t ever searched before my op so maybe Whoopi rings bells. When you think about it my luggage contained lots of pouches so they’re right to drug test it. I am sure lots of people have tried to smuggle all sorts.
It doesn’t bother me either they’re not invasive just a drug wand thing and then a feel here and there no problem. I’m glad they’re doing their job and checking

  • My two bags show up going through the scanner and they’re right to check. I just said once we were in the private room “ I’m so sorry you have to look at a bag of my urine” because I was asked to lift my top so they could check what was there! She just asked me to pat it!! All done in seconds. I’m always taken to a private room and it’s always a lady checking, so I’ve no issues with it at all. Glad you’ve had a whale of a time!

  • hi SarahH21 - Glad to hear fizz doesn't cause you grief. It really is horses for courses. I can eat baked beans which I know causes a lot of problems for people. I like my vodka with fresh orange juice!.. X.

  • hi,  I remember Dublin as being more security consciousness than other countries and this was before 9/11. Ar one point I thought I was going to have to strip down to my bra and knickers. - That didn't happen.

  • It’s funny isn’t it Kath? Everyone’s so different. See, the orange juice would give me indigestion! Joy

I can eat baked beans, and sweetcorn, with no issues, even the skin on a jacket potato. Cast iron insides in general it would seem! Joy

  • Absolutely SarahH21. 12 years down the line I can eat many things I couldn't at the start. I still can't eat chocolate - that hasn't changed - nor green vegetables. If I try my stomach tends to gurgle and fart!

  • I had a big bowl of fruit and fibre cereal the other day for breakfast…then my cleaner came and we were chatting when my bag let  out an enormous fart! She doesn’t know I have stomas so it was a bit of a shocker! Joy
