Long Haul Travel with Stomas?

Just wondered if anyone had done any long haul travel with stomas? I have a colostomy and urostomy and up to now have only done short haul flights to Majorca and Lanzarote.

This week, I’m attempting something much longer and hoping all will be ok! My colostomy can play up when I’m stressed and I am feeling a bit anxious about the long journey already!

  • Well Ann-I have reached the Maldives after a 50 minute traffic delay in the taxi, one almost 7 hour flight and a second 4 hour flight. Plus a 45 minute speedboat transfer to our island. Not a single issue with either bag and not a single leak anywhere! So glad I decided to brave this trip!

  • That’s brilliant Sarah,have a great time.Love Jane xx

  • Hi Ann

An update after a couple of days here. My colostomy has been brilliant-absolutely no issues at all, but my urostomy has been very problematic. I’m not sure if the heat and humidity are having an effect, but having way more leaks than I would expect, which has been very challenging. I’m so glad now that I brought so many bags as I am using lots more than normal. Also glad I brought puppy pads for the bed! Had 2 night time leaks but luckily woke immediately before any damages was done, but it’s quite stressful. Of course I’m drinking a lot of water in the heat but I’m very glad we have our own villa and pool so I’m close to the loo!

So pleased you have your own villa. It makes such a difference and is definitely worth it.
It does sound like the heat is causing a problem for you. What a pain. It’s important to keep the fluids up. Maybe your skin is hot too when you’re applying your bags. Hopefully it’ll calm down as you adjust to the heat. At least Boris is behaving himself. Tell Donald to shut up.
    have fun

  • Haha! Yes, Boris good, Donald bad! But definitely better today-no leaks at all so far and I’m getting a bit more confident about it. I need to be drinking loads of water in this heat, so I’ll just keep doing that and keep my fingers crossed it might be more settled now.

The villa is so good for someone like me who needs to get to the loo quickly!

  • Yes when we went to Spain we had our own Villa and it was really relaxing. No stress about toilet visits. Perfect.
Hope Donald behaved himself. Give him a good talking to.

  • Hi Sarah

My husband has had ileostomy last year and we are planning to go to the Philippines next year. It will be his first travel with stoma. I am a bit worried as it will a very long haul and I want to know how others cope too.

I will be following this thread.

    Thanks

    Judy xx
