Output, Any suggestions, please?

Hi all,

I am having problems with my output. I think I had a bowel obstruction on Wednesday night/Thursday morning and thankfully I went three times yesterday (the output was very thick) but nothing today, even though I have taken 2 Laxido and drank a lot of water. I am not in any pain or discomfort just annoyed and worried. Any help or suggestions, please? Please don’t tell me to contact the stoma nurses as I seem to be always ringing them for one thing or another.

I have a colostomy which I have had since 2016. It has gone from “all singing and dancing” in the early days, to gradually being very slow. I was diagnosed in April with radiation enteritis and in September I was diagnosed with a dropped pelvic floor. And also have an urostomy.

Thank you,

Lisa x

  • Hi Lisa,

Sorry I’m an ileostomy so we have different outputs. I just wanted to say hello and wish you well. There’s so many on here that have dealt with all sorts.

If you don’t get any tips here the Stoma nurses are so helpful I’m sure they would like to advice you or there are nurses here, I’ve had advice from them and they were wonderful. I’ve had a block and found heat gallons of water and very gentle pelvic tilts got things moving.

  • Hi  Ann,

    Thank you for your reply.

I rang the stoma nurses just after I posted this thread and she told me as I had three lots of output yesterday and with the enteritis and prolapsed pelvis it maybe just the way things are now. I told I wasn't in any pain (thankfully) and she seems very unconcerned which is good. She also told me that there are a lot of patients like myself and sometimes their colostomy doesn't function for days! I asked her about taking more Laxido? and she told me to stick to the prescribed 3 to 4 a day.

I didn't eat much yesterday, so maybe that is having an effect?

    Thank you for your kindness.

    Love and good vibes,

  • Hi Lisa

I also have a colostomy and urostomy. I can go up to 2 days without any output from the colostomy and then it will get going again and maybe go 2 or 3 times in one day. I had plenty yesterday for example, but none so far today. I have never had to take laxido though. Yesterday I didn’t eat much, so always assume this is the reason. Drinking coffee tends to get it started!

It may well be that this is just how it is for you now, and it’s good the stoma nurse isn’t concerned. I would only be concerned if I had pain along with no output, because I’d be concerned about possible blockage, but thankfully this has never been the case for me.

I hope it gets going again soon and you can relax. xx

  • Hi ,

Thank you for your lovely reply and it is good know there is someone else who has two stomas.

I have had movement and I have just emptied my colostomy bag (drainable).

The stoma nurse said the same as you, that maybe just how it is for me now because of the radiation enteritis and prolapsed pelvis, these are the reasons I take Laxido.

I have had bowel obstructions in the past they are dreadful. I am glad you haven't had one and I hope you, myself or anyone else doesn't have one.

I guess I worry and stress a lot about it and I know I shouldn't.

  • Hi Lisa

Phew-that’s good news! Glad to hear things are on the move again. I was a bit concerned myself recently when I went almost 3 days with nothing, but tried not to stress as I wasn’t in any discomfort. Full fat coke often helps me move things along. Blockage is always a fear.

I had a total pelvic exenteration for recurrent cervical cancer, hence my two bags. xxx

    1. Hi Lisa & Sarah

I thought that the ileos were the blockers I didn’t realise that colostomy’s blocked easily too.
Do you have to be mindful of everything you eat?
Im paranoid however with emptying every two half hours I do have early notice if things stop moving.
    Lisa have yours got names?

  • Hi ,

    Thank you for your reply.

Yes, keeping everything moving is a full time job and I am terrified of bowel obstructions. As long as we are not in pain, then that is something. I think I may keep something fizzy to keep and get thinks moving.

I have two stomas because I had cervical cancer and radiotherapy damaged by bladder and bowel. I have been told I have a lot of scar tissue which causes some problems, which is another reason I take Laxido.

  • Hi  Ann,

Thank you for your reply and message.

Yes, all of us ostomates are all at a risk. I have a lot of scar tissue, radiation enteritis and a prolapsed pelvis due to the damage caused by radiotherapy, plus the surgeries as well. This is why I take up to 4 Laxido a day.

No, I haven’t named mine simply because it isn’t something I would do.

  • Hi Artsie Ann

Yes, colostomies can get blockages and when I first had mine I was very careful about what I ate and chewing everything well. Nowadays I can literally eat and drink anything I want, but I’m careful with peanuts as I had a lot of pain when eating them at first. I can have some now but I don’t have many! Cheese and bacon made me very squeamish at first, but now bacon is not  problem. Cheese I need to be careful not to eat too much at once as it can still make me feel squeamish, but I love cheese! I have zero issues with the things they warn you about, like corn, popcorn, fruit skins, baked potato skins etc. I think I’m very lucky to not have had my colostomy impact much on what I can have. xx
