I thought I would be interesting to have a light hearted conversation about how our Stoma’s dictate what we can eat.
This is not in any way meant to be advice more a little research into how we manage meals and adapt the meals we enjoyed which are now banned by our Stoma’s
I was on a very high fibre low carb diet before the operation. On waking up my transformation started,
Once home I reverted to that four year old with fish finger white bread sandwiches with Mayo and butter. I ate steamed puddings and custard basically everything I’d stopped eating years ago high sugar and beige I really enjoyed being able to eat those banned food.
How I would love to chomp a sweet corn, fresh salad and tomatoes.
What did you survive on after your op and what do you miss eating most ? ……….
Hi kath
i will definitely try that coleslaw It sounds delicious may be on a burger with shredded baby spinach I found that’s a great way to imitate lettuce and it’s full of iron
It’s definitely heading to stew weather. Oh dear. Think I will have to pressure cook for extra time to make sure veg is very soft.
take care

Hi Melly
i agree I do miss sweet corn red raw onion tomatoes. And the list goes on.
I always loved M&S caramelised onion chutney and one day I decided it’s squashy and I’m going for it. Whoopi likes it too so I’m so happy about that. Not sure if it’s safe for everyone though. So please don’t get a blockage on my recommendation
best wishes

Hi Karen
Thanks for making me smile. Mushrooms, luckily I wasn’t keen before.
I had fish and chips yesterday have to say they were worth it. I’ve found that baby oil is great for a quicker evacuation and adding another squirt before emptying helps greatly.
Great tip for copying, I get in a fluster at times, not on any social media now and am out of practice.
best wishes

hi my understanding of 'pancaking' is when the poo goes sideways instead of straight down the bag causing leaks. When too thick I push the poo down to the bottom of the bag.

Thanks Kath. I'll keep my fingers crossed I never have a pancacking situation. I've had some very soft well cooked onions in a casserole tonight which is a bit risky cos my stoma is most active overnight. I'm pretty confident I won't have a leak as I've worked hard to find the right combination of products but I'll probably have to get up a couple of times in the night to empty it!
Thanks again for the advice.
Take care Melly
Hi Kath
i wondered have you managed rhubarb.
I grow my own and love it, drank the juice, made syrups for ice cream and rhubarb crumble. I froze it because it helped my issues pre-op. After operation I threw it all away because I thought blockage or too loose. My rhubarb has now shrank but it’ll be back.
Have you tried rhubarb, or maybe you’re not a fan I know it is a marmite thing.
I can make a crumble topping that’s low fibre but I’m definitely a rhubarb base fan.
best wishes

hi Artsie, I loved loved loved rhubarb but it doesn't love me. The fibrous texture tende to cause me blockage and terrific pain llke celery and pineapple. But you can eat it - that's great - I bet your crumble is delicious. My favourite crumble is apricot - that just causes runny poo for a day.

Oh no . Rhubarbs off my list of things to try.
Maybe when the young shoots sprout I will try a syrup and a very small amount with lots of pastry type crumble and ice cream. I will be further along then.
I could eat that right now. But Whoops would make me pay.
I went out for a gorgeous roast today, first time no mashed veg, I chewed for ages but she’s not a happy girl…. Think I’m in for a bad night
