Hi I’ve been cancer free for 2 years and now it’s returned. I’m due to have a high anterior resection on 10th September which means I will have a temporary stoma.
I, and my family, are devastated and trying to keep calm.
I’ve joined this group hoping for advise and tips on living with a stoma.

Hi Jackie,
Following your post and I'm wondering if you're having a colostomy or ileostomy? After your op you should be able to reintroduce all if not most of what you eat at the moment, and as for your clothes, it's very much a personal thing, but you'll find what suits you and what you feel good in - don't think you have to change your style just because of a stoma!
Whilst you're only starting to prepare your hospital bag, have you thought about after your op? I found that after my op I needed a fair bit of help at home, and that my concentration span was extremely short. So... just a thought for you...!!

Hi Jackie
I know it's easier said than done but try not to think too much about the 24th, it will come quicker than you think, the more you think about it the more apprehensive you will become just carry on doing the usual everyday things that you enjoy.
Try not to think about questions you need to ask there'll be plenty time to answer your questions after the surgery, the stoma care nurses in the hospital will give you lots of advice and when you get home I'll be here to help you and answer questions and give you all the advice you need at any time of the day.
Let's get the surgery out of the way first before we think about anything else, but one thing to remember is that we are all different and we take time to settle into having an ileostomy (stoma) and to life afterwards, so don't be too eager to rush into doing things when you get home, listen to your body it will soon tell you if something is wrong.
Keep talking to me right up to 24th and after the 26th if there is something that the nurses have told that you don't understand just give me a shout from you hospital bed and I'll give you the answer.

Hello Ian I have been worrying about the operation especially at night when I can’t get to sleep. But I’ve been practising my yoga breathing and that’s been getting me over it. (whatever works). And then of course so many friends and family giving advice etc !!
I’m going swimming with my friend this afternoon and out for a meal with my husband, sister and her husband tonight. Tomorrow is my Granddaughters 9th Birthday so that will be this weekend gone !
Thank you for your reassuring words.
Jackie.
Hi Linda I’m having a high anterior resection resulting in a ileostomy.
Ive not really thought much past the operation but I do have a large close family all living nearby so should have plenty of help once home. My husband will need to go back to work ASAP as he’s self employed . I’m hoping I will recover quickly, I’ve been told I shall probably need chemo too afterwards. I had chemo tablets 2 years ago but it won’t be tablet form this time. It’s very daunting x
