I’m 41, and I have Ileostomy now, as starting the treatment for my rectal cancer, I’m finding it very difficult to get out from the house having stoma, I’m worried about how I look, the noises it makes, what to wear, the bag filling up, leaking etc etc, it’s frustrating not able to do the things I used to do like my job, exercising etc

    HI DAWN

A very nice welcome and encouraging words to all newcomers I'm sure they will appreciate them more than they would from an old foggey like myself.

It's really good that you are getting out and about and visiting many places without too much problem. Toilet cards are a boon that we should be using and not afraid to show as necessary.

I hope that the weather will be kind to you when you visit my home city to see The Tattoo, I'm sure you'll enjoy it, suggestion if you can take a cushion to sit on and a blanket to cover your knees as it can be a bit cold and windy up on the esplanade.

    Best wishes

    Ian

Tell me when you get back from Edinburgh if you found this and why it was started!

Thanks Ian, it's my husband's home town too. We visited as a family for the first time in October and looking forward to the tattoo, just hope it's not raining Fingers crossed

    Hi Lakita,

I can honestly say from my experience you will get used to it.  I found its appearance quite hard to handle at first but it does settle and you will become used to it.  Getting the right fitting for your bag is crucial and I used the colorectal nurses alot in the initial days and weeks, trying different styles and makes.  Introduce food gradually too and don't eat too late at night as that have an impact.  I found tucking the bag inside my pants helped to flatten it down a bit too!!  It took about three months until I was back into my jeans and I am now able to do all activities as usual.  Keep going and seek support from colorectal team if you are finding it difficult.

    Good luck with your treatment.

  • Cheers Dawn, hope all goes well for you and enjoy the Tattoo,I'm going on the 19th with my (as Ian Says) cushion blanket and a spare bag or two.Funnily enough I am from Edinburgh also, and looked up Ians wee teaser as I never knew what the picture was called. Very interesting Ian." Lang may yer Lum Reek ".
