Hi everyone,
Hoping someone can shed some light on this. I have a colostomy and until now haven't had too much of a problem, but yesterday morning an area reaching from my stoma across to the centre of my abdomen, and below the stoma was swollen. It was quite hard too, and I initially thought that I had a partial blockage. Then I wondered if my hernia was giving me bother. I could feel a large lump, probably the size of a ping pong ball stuck underneath the area that was swollen. When I got up this morning the skin was inflamed and hot. Thankfully I got a lot of output with irrigation. I have lymphodema too, and it just feels that this has spread to my abdomen. I wondered if anyone had any ideas or if they know what this could possibly be? I have an appointment with the stoma nurses tomorrow, so thankfully won't have long to wait.
Thanks,
Linda :-)
Hi Linda
I'm sorry to hear about the problems you're having and I'm hoping that your stoma nurse was able to help you yesterday.
Although I'm not a member of this group I noticed that your post had gone unanswered. This may be because no one else has had this problem or simply that your post hasn't been read yet. By replying to you it will bump your post back to the top of the page where it may be seen by someone with the right experience.
I'm also going to 'tag' my fellow Community Champions and into my reply as they may be able to help you further.

Hi Linda
Your post has been flagged up to me and I must be honest I did read your original post of the 12th and when I noticed that you were seeing your stoma nurse the next day I did not reply as my advice would have been to contact your stoma nurse urgently which you were already doing. Unfortunately I have no practical experience of irrigation and only know the principle of the procedure.
I hope the stoma care nurse was able to help you and it was nothing serious.
Please accept my apologies for not responding sooner.
Ian
Hi everyone,
Just to say that I saw my stoma nurse and she has reassured me it's my hernia that has increased quite a lot since the last time I saw her (a few months ago). And more importantly, she doesn't think it's anything sinister. So it was a bit of a relief! She'll contact my surgeon and see if they can do anything because of the size of it now, so I think surgery is on the horizon. Whilst I saw my surgeon the last time and he said no, which I accepted at the time, I think surgery is the only option now. But with waiting times here so long, I won't be holding my breath!!!
Linda :-)
Hi Linda
Glad to hear that and hopefully the surgeon is in the same page as you and will book you in for a repair.
Melt us know how you get on.
Best wishes
Hi Linda
Pleased to see that your stoma care nurse doesn't think it anything more sinister that your parastomal hernia which has increased in size.
I don't want to "rain on your parade" but many consultants are reluctant to operate and repair parastomal hernias unless they are causing problems or extremely large.
I had mine repaired last July due to a suspected blockage and was warned that the parastomal hernia could rear it's it's again, and true to their words 11 months later the hernia is back and increasing in size but I was told that they would not be doing anything about it at this time which was a relief because of what I went through last July when the repair was carried out and the stoma repaired, life has not been the same since.
Just for the record I don't lift things heavy or do anything strenuous and always wear my support garments and yes I did say garments in the form of boxer shorts and a support girdle (too much information for you!!)
I do hope that they might be able to do something for you and if comes to repair ask what material they'll be using and the life span.
Good luck.
Ian
