Hello All,

Hope everyone is doing well.

Just joined this group although have been reading for over a year.

I've had my loop ileostomy since September 2017 and will be happy to chat and share experience with others.

Today I would like to ask those who already had a reversal. Mine is planned for this year, I saw a surgeon last week and was told that waiting time in our area is around 6 months - deep joy!! However today I received a letter inviting me for a water soluble enema test.

Of course I googled it and read a few leaflets from different hospitals. I get an idea, but would like to hear real stories.

The letter does say bring a spare stoma bag. Does that mean my Stompy will get flushed too? Or just up the backside? When I asked my Oncologist this same question, he smiled and said both. I forgot to ask the surgeon.

I'm curious as to what happens after the procedure? Would I be able to return to work in the afternoon or need a whole day off?

I totally understand that everyone is different, but would love to hear from those who's been through this.

Thanks everyone Slight smile

    Hi ,

That's great news! Make the PJ's something with a nice, comfy waist because it will be a little sensitive. Also, someone else recommended a "grab bag" for loo visits, to include baby wipes, barrier cream and some pads just for in case.

    Good luck for Friday!

    Thank you Karen Blush

Chilling out tonight. Strangely not worried at all.

Got a grab bag packed too, with wet wipes and Salts barrier wipes, which I used for skin around stoma.

If all goes well, I'll be asking your advise what to do with all remaining supplies, believe there's a charity that accepts these? But that's later. One step at a time.

    Many thanks

  • Hi Rinka

I hope all went well for you.

I have just had my water soluble enema and await the results. I was told that my bowel was a bit narrow so may need further investigation.

I was due for the stoma reversal next month but this has been delayed as chemotherapy has been recommended. This means a further 3 month wait.

All the best for a stoma free future.

    Good afternoon all Blush

It's done! Recovering in hospital, the wound is tiny, dressing is about the size of a matchbox.

Started to sip water last night and eating light bites today. No BM yet. Surgeon says it takes time and I will be allowed home once that happens. No sign of it at all, but thankfully don't feel sick. Just quiet, tired and happy.

From your guys experience, is it 2-3 days?

Good luck!  The first week or two are likely to be tricky - but mine settled down ok

first bm day 3 for me -  home after 5 days as I had some muscle recon and a chunky epidural for 4 days

    take painkillers as necessary!!

    well done

    Nick

  • Well done Irina - Yes 2-3 days sounds about right

    Thank you Karen Blush

1st **it happened midday today, loose, but perfectly controlled. I'm well equipped with barrier wipes and wet wipes and look forward to going home tomorrow.

Thanks again to all lovely people on this site, who helped me jump through this hoop.

    Hi Karen & Yolande,

The joy of recovery!! As you would imagine, there's some increased  frequency. Every time I pull my pants back up, I automatically try to smooth and straighten the bag. Feel the dressing and giggle.

It's nowhere near as bad as I feared. Skin on bum does feel a bit burnt, I'm off to a see a practice nurse tomorrow for dressing change. Will talk to her about this and pick up some Sudocrem from a pharmacy.

Anything else you ladies would recommend to protect that bit of skin?

    Thank you,

    Irina x
