It may benefit you

Hi all,

I thought I would let you know know what benefits and help you could be entitled too.

Warm Home Discount

If your total household income is less than  £16,000 a year or you receive PIP or DLA or State Pension, you could be entitled to the Warm Home Discount.

It is a one off amount of around  £140.00, which is credited to your electricity bill/account. It also applies to Pay As You Go electric meters. You just contact your electricity provider and ask them about the Warm Home and they will do the rest for you.

Note:

You will not be refunded the money, as it is a credit on your electricity account, regardless how you pay, so you won't get it to "go Christmas shopping".

And neither is it your money. It is money from the government to help those who need it the most.

It is ONLY credited to the electricity account NOT your gas account. The reason behind this, everyone has electricity.

Also you can not transfer the credit to your gas account.

Age doesn't come into it. If you qualify, you get it.

Personal Independent Payment or PIP

This is replacing Disability Living Allowance. You could be entitled to this.

It is designed for how you deal with day to day activities, such as. Do you need help to shower/wash? Do you need to be reminded to take your medication? How far can you walk? Do you need help to dress? Can you prepare your food/meal? These are some of the questions I can remember. It is not so much about what is wrong with you or how ill you may have been, it was about how you cope and how you need help.

You apply by calling the PIP people themselves directly on 0800 9172222. Please be sure to have your National Insurance Number and bank details with you. The back details are taken at this point, because if you qualify, the money will be paid directly and quickly.

It does take a while and if you are either already in receipt of PIP or DLA, you need to reapply about 6 months before it comes up for review, as the timescales are 20 weeks. However, if you are successful this will be backdated to the date you applied for it.

The form is daunting. I would recommend getting help to fill it in from your local Citizen Advice Bureau. Also your local hospital will have a Benefits Welfare Rights  Advisor or an Almoner who will help you complete the form.

Employment Support Allowance

If you are of working age but can't work due to your health, you could be entitled to Employment Support Allowance.

You need to be unemployed.

If you get ESA, this does not affect you applying for PIP or if you are in receipt of PIP or DLA.

You can apply for ESA by calling 0345 6088545.

The form is similar to the PIP and can be confusing. Again contact your local Citizen Advice Bureau or your hospital Benefits Welfare Rights Advisor or Almoner, who will help you.

Also, you could be entitled to a grant from Macmillan. Yes, it is the same Macmillan.

Please visit www.macmillan.org.uk/.../macmillan-grants.html

I hope you find this helpful and if you apply for any of these, I wish you every success. Even if you have applied before and were unsuccessful, try again, it does not hurt and you may gain something.

Kind regards and thank you,

  • Hi all,

    Attendance Allowance

You can get Attendance Allowance if you’re 65.

The form comes with notes telling you how to fill it in and where to send it.

I have looked at the form online and it is long and more daunting than the PIP form. I would suggest you get help to complete it from the Citizen Advice Bureau, or a Benefits Welfare Rights Advisor or an Almoner from your hospital.

To apply, call the Attendance Allowance helpline

    Telephone: 0345 605 6055

    Textphone: 0345 604 5312

Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm.

    Kind regards and thank you,

    Lisa

I have seen on other sites that in some areas you can get help from your water company if you have a Stoma and benefits.  I think they cap your bill.   Found this link

  • Hi Patricia,

Fingers and toes crossed for you.

The form is long winded and its best to get help to complete it.

Once I had completed the form and sent it back, I waited 19 weeks for a decision. There wasn't anything wrong just they were/are dealing with a back log. Hopefully you won't have to wait that long, but the good thing was the payments were back dated.

You may also be eligible for Employment Support Allowance. You are entitled to claim for this and it doesn't affect the PIP. You could be eligible for both. Ask your Social Worker about it.

    All the best,

    Lisa

  • Hi all,

    Just a reminder.

With winter nearly upon us, some of us may qualify for the Warm Home Discount.

See my previous post on this post which will tell you more about it. If you are unsure if you qualify, please contact your electricity provider/supplier and they wil be able to help you. It doesn't matter if your have a credit or a pay as you go electric meter.

    Kind regards and keep dancing,

    Lisa

If this helps, my macmillan nurse passed my case on to Citizens advice and they did my Pip and blue badge applications for me. My Pip started coming through within about 3 weeks going through them, I think they have a fast track way of doing things.

The good people from our local hospice arranged both my PIP and my blue badge  for me. Both came through very quickly, perhaps 2/3 weeks from memory.

  • We applied for Attendance allowance for my 81 year old husband who has had surgery and is starting chemo soon. We waited 8 weeks to be told that he is not entitled to it as he has not had the condition for 6 months.

  • Hi,

With Attendance Allowance and PIP it's not the condition or illness, it is how you manage day to day. Such as getting dressed, preparing food, bathing, etc.

I don' know if you did, but it' best to ask your local Citizens advice bureau for help, as they are the experts when completing the forms.

  • Thank you. I phoned them the other day to explain that even though he only had his operation in October he’s had the condition for considerably longer.

The assessor got back to me today, apologised for assuming that he’d only needed help since the operation and was very helpful. We will probably get the lower rate as he doesn’t need help at night. Every little helps though
