Sorry to hear about your friend is going through and the impact that is having on you. I might have to disagree with your comment about being totally useless though as they obviously find some support in texting you so no need at all to apologize.
We all go through a whole bunch of emotions when someone we love gets cancer as we can see in the list here. I found being able to recognize them and accept them as valid can help make them less overwhelming.
