I've had a very lucky life and until recently I was 27 with all 4 grandparents, with all family members in relatively good health.
Unfortunately my Grandad passed away last week and my Grandma (his wife) was diagnosed with cancer the day before. They don't know where the cancer started yet and only picked it up in its secondary location. She's been given 3-6 months and to say I'm devastated is an understatement as we are so close.
My initial questions are usually how accurate is the given time frame? My heart breaks thinking I won't have another birthday, Christmas, even a summer with her.
How do you make the most of time with someone knowing its significantly limited? I can't help but cry everytime I see her which isn't fun for any of us!
Hi MabelMouse
Your grandma is in the very early stages of diagnosis and what is sometimes referred to as cancer or unknown primary can give rise to a whole new set of concerns, we even have a special group just for that - Unknown primary cancer forum
When my wife was diagnosed she was clear she did not want a prognosis and I really struggled with that. However in her case I do not thing anybody could have actually made a reasonable prognosis. Certainly in my time on here I have seen many people outlive a prognosis but also seen people whose prognosis turned out to be quite accurate - when might apply to your grandma however I could not guess.
If we look at your feelings when someone has cancer I know I spot a lot of the issues I went through, however recognizing these can help them feel less overwhelming. Of course in this case you both have the issue of dealing with the death of your grandad too.
