Hi My dad is 82 and has stage 4 prostate cancer. he was diagnosed a couple of years ago and when he was told the diagnosis they said he had around 2 years to live. Whether it’s the prospect of being at that 2 year stage or the fact that he seems to have given up lately his mental health is so low and he is so depressed. My poor mum who is also in her 80’s is so stressed out and I feel like I’m at the end of my tether. What can you say or what can you do because nothing you say or do will make the situation any better as the inevitable is going to happen. It’s the not knowing when that’s so hard. Has anyone else had elderly parents with advanced cancer that is or has struggled with mental health and coping with the situation as a whole? Thanks
Hi Mummav
I'm sorry to hear of your family's situation. It must be very frustrating as you want to help but it is difficult to know where to start. Is your mum managing with looking after your dad, is she his carer or is he independent? It may be worth getting your dad's GP involved, to see what support could be arranged or even an assessment re the depression. If you or your mum are a carer, these are some website for carer support
Palliative care support can be gained from Hospice UK or Marie Curie. Their websites are below or your GP may refer you. Some hospices have day care clubs which offer activities and support from staff. It may also be beneficial for your dad to chat to other people in the same situation.
I hope that your situation improves and that you find the support and help you need. Best wishes,
A x
