Struggling with emotions

Back in 2020 my Dad was diagnosed with stage 3 bowel cancer, he went through all the treatment and operation to remove his bowel and then he was given the all clear. We were all so relieved. But in February 2022, we were told that the cancer was back. More recently we have found out he has stage 4 cancer of his liver and lymph nodes, they think it was there all along. He has just started his treatment, it seems quite intense (compared to his last lot of treatment). Right now I am feeling so scared of what the future might hold, I’m scared treatment is going to make him ill and he will be in some sort of pain (his cancer hasn’t caused him any illness/pains at all so far). I honestly don’t know how to digest and cope with the news right now. I want to do so much to help my Dad, but also feel so helpless at the same time.

I’m not a hugely emotional person in front of people so my Dad and other family members don’t necessarily know how much I’m struggling.

Im not sure this post will make much sense and posting on a forum isn’t something I’d normally do, but just feel I need to get at least part of how I’m feeling out somewhere.

  • Hi Opiex

Welcome to the forum and sorry to hear about your Dad.  It’s perfectly understandable that you are scared at what the future might hold and that your Dad’s treatment will make him ill.  I noticed that you are a member of the family and friends forum. Why not put your post on there as I’m sure there will be others who will be only too happy to help. Also if you’d like to why not ring the Macmillan helpline which is open from 8 am to 8 pm seven days a week. The number is 0808 808 00 00. You can also email Macmillan or chat on online to a Macmillan Volunteer.

Wishing you and your family well an I hope your father’s treatment goes well.

    Best wishes
