Hi all, wondering what others experience/knowledge was around drinking Green tea whilst on Chemo therapy, Cistoplatin and Gemcitabin in particular? My Husband started Chemo last week and at the session the Nurse advised him not to drink Green tea whilst on chemo as she said could negate the effects of the treatment due to it's antioxidant qualities. The was not mentioned anywhere else in talks and documentation supplied previously and was only mentioned in passing - indeed another patient there had no knowledge of this and was still rising green tea throughout.
Looking in to this further there is conflicting evidence around this and a lot of support for Green tea having a positive impact in managing side effects of the drugs.
Thanks
Kate
We are seeing the Consultant on Weds this week so will raise it with him then and feedback. I have come across some interesting papers where it has been positively reported of Green Tea interacting with Cisplatin so am hopeful that perhaps this was a personal view of the nurse.
Would love to know how you got on. I too was told it might decrease the effectiveness of Cisplatin.
Cisplatin affected my kidney function so I was swapped from Gemcitabine and Cisplatin to Gemcitabine and Carboplatin. Any information on that?
Hiya, sorry to hear Cisplatin caused some kidney issues I've heard this can happen. Hope you are getting on ok with the Carboplaton instead.
We finally got to speak to the Oncology Pharmacist who when asked had to do some research and confirmed Green Tea drinking was fine with the CisGem combo of drugs. I have read an article where it has even helped the Cisplatin effectiveness. it was the Chemo nurse locally who advised against green tea of any kind.
They explained there are some drugs where it is thought it should be avoided - best to check with the Oncology pharmacist.
Good luck with your treatment.
Thanks for that., same experience with one nurse.
Sitting here drink guess what. :-)
