I keep trying to post this but haven’t succeeded so far so trying again. My husband was diagnosed with with metastatic kidney cancer four years ago. Until recently he has had no symptoms of cancer since the blood in urine which led to diagnosis. Until he pulled a muscle in his back last Thursday he was still playing badminton and pickleball. However his behaviour is bizarre and seems aimed at upsetting me. He pretends he cannot hear a Ford I say despite only having a slight to moderate hearing loss. His appetite is reduced due to chemo tablets but instead of just eating lesser amounts but pokes and prods at food and cuts it into minute pieces, meaning meals last forever. It used to be just dinner but yesterday he took 49 minutes to eat one piece of toast and most of a bowl of cereal . He is rude and embarrassing in restaurants as he looks like he has a bad smell under his nose. We often go away on short breaks but after one particularly bad episode in September, I told him the next trip would be a test as I wasn’t prepared for him to behave so rudely. I suggested he could order a starter as a main. We went away and he ordered duck and ate the lot without any histrionics. I have been awake since 3.45am as he woke me up to say he couldn’t cope with the pain of a pulled muscle I had to stop him dialling 999 . He phoned 111 who clearly realised this was not urgent and didn’t phone back for 4 hours. We came downstairs where he slept in a chair . He knows I can only sleep in bed no matter how tired I am. He absolutely refuses to drink enough water or snack to compensate for reduced meals and gets very bad tempered when I try to persuade him. Most of the time he is pain free so he can’t use that as an excuse particularly as I am in pain for at least some of every 24 hours period. He often says I’m unsupportive as I won’t support his view, contrary to the evidence, that he has profound hearing problems and I get irrritated when I have to repeat everything I say unless it’s in response to something he has said when his hearing is much improved. I have done a great deal to support him. I’m near breaking point and one if our sons has suggested I give myself a break and go away for a few days but I fear that would feed into his constant belief that he is a poor hapless and helpless victim. It’s good to hear other oeople have husbands or partners with same attitude. Don’t know if anyone has any suggestions
I’m so sorry reading this, sounds like you are really in need of a break. As harsh as it sounds, you wouldn’t want to explode back and having to regret the words afterwords :( I’m sorry, I know I’m not being very helpful and I’m truly sorry sorry about your husband. But as carers we have to think about ourselves too, it’s impossible to do I know.. but maybe take your son’s advice and have at least one day break, if at all possible?
My sister was diagnosed last year, she only 46 and she has stage 4 cancer, we went for a cyst check up in Sep 2025 and since then we’ve had bad news after bad news.. she can be very difficult at times and impossible to talk to, I keep my distance for a short while and then she apologises and then we both cry
Please take care of yourself xxx
