Pain and nerve damage

My husband has DLBCL…lymphoma to cut it short, he’s had 5 rounds of R-CHOP, the 6th was cancelled after a heart scan showed some damage

since the last treatment he’s had his pet scan , results next week, however he’s been having this horrendous pain for weeks  , only in his fight lower leg and foot, I think that it’s nerve and muscle damage , BUT …he won’t let me phone our GP and ask them what we can do to help with this horrendous pain , he won’t let me phone his clinical nurse, he’ll be there next week !!!
the thing that confuses me is that it’s always worse during the night , always around 3-4am …is this normal?  is there anyone else out there that has a hubby as stubborn as mine that thinks he knows best and won’t use the professional help he needs or anybody that can give me advice on what helps…paracetamol helped at first, however ,the pain has increased so intensely, over the weeks, and the paracetamol doesn’t touch it now

  • Hi

Sorry no experience with what you say directly but some experience with chronic pain as I have a kind of arthritis. There are a whole series of pain control measures I can get from my doctor but choices of over the counter are much more limited.

For quite some time I resisted taking any form of medication - so yes I can be really stubbon - but I learnt. Often men are poor at seeking help.

If you ring the helpline here they may be able to offer some more direct advice. It is worth noting though the difference he noted in the pain being worse over night - details like that can sometimes be really insightful as part of a diagnosis.

Hopefully the appointment next week will move things on - providing he tells the doctors what he needs.

    <<hugs>>

  • Hello

I am sorry your husband in in pain…short term, ibuprofen can be taken every 4 hours as well as paracetamol…will need other medication if he takes ibuprofen long term to protect his stomach lining..but it may help till you both see his clinical nurse. Depending on when he takes last dose of paracetamol it may be wearing off at that 3am .  We maintained the   8 tablets dosage every 6 hours even if it meant waking at 2am. It was usually 3 am.

nerve pain was managed for my husband with gabapentin..so there are ways to help with the pain should this be the cause but obviously needs to be prescribed .  Take care  and a big hug xx

Take a deep breath ... then on with the day.

  • Update …the pain appeared to reach its peak a few days ago , he’s still having pain spasms but they’re not as severe , he woke me this morning 4am, just to sit with him and place my hand on his calf , we’ve found that this helps rather than rubbing, however, I’m now thinking why on earth did he wake me , the pain was ok, he was ok …he just needed me to be there…I love him I will do anything for him …but I’m so tired …I’ve sat here since 4am, he’s asleep , I’m waiting for him to shout me …which he won’t because it’s always around 4am….I’m going to have a chat with him later …or do I just leave it…for him to want me there and waking me will be huge for him…he’s a BLOKE , he’s never been a “whoa is me” guy ….crack on and keep doing what I’m doing …THANKYOU for your replies, it’s wonderful that we have this group xx

  • Hello…I’m glad things are easing for your husband…never underestimate the power of touch..it’s reassuring to say the least at a scary time in both your lives BUT…totally get you need to sleep…try and relax and sleep..it may be that you sit awake all night and he doesn’t wake for the first time in a week … you know if he needs you…you will be the first he will let know xx

Take a deep breath ... then on with the day.

  • For probably the first time in weeks I managed an extra hour in bed fast asleep, he’s not had a spasm ..I’m still up early but feel really refreshed not having broken sleep …onwards and upwards hopefully

he has a meeting tomorrow with his consultant, hopefully she will be able to give him more information on this pain he’s been experiencing

im a little concerned that his last R-CHOPwas cancelled due to his ecg showing heart damage, however, 6/7 weeks on,some of his initial symptoms appear to be returning …can these be after effects from his 5 rounds ? Maybe his meeting tomorrow, and results from his last pet scan , can highlight us more ….nerves taking over now

he has an appointment with a heart specialist in 3 weeks, hopefully we will find out the extent of the damage , we was told initially it was mild and that the 6th round would not be beneficial to him, all of his bloods have been good up-to now ,not sure if they’ll do the final round ,or a different mix, …anybody else been in this situation ?
