Suspected bowel cancer

Hi Everyone

I had a high FIT test result 3 weeks ago, it was 85mg is that high ???Ive got an urgent Colonoscopy in a weeks time. Had on/off bleeding for months and the last few times has been quite a lot which lasted a few days. Only when I opened bowels. Other poo sample I had shown no sign of gut problems or higher up inflammation.
I’m constantly tired, have stomach ache before and after using the loo. Bloating, lower back pain, vomiting and just feel crap. I’m 48 and have family members who have sadly died from bowel cancer on my mums side.

I know that we can’t say it’s bowel cancer till I’ve been for colonoscopy and scan and everyone’s saying Oh it could just be polyps or piles…… But I have bad feeling and just need honest answers. Likeliness this is of being cancer. I’m really worried. Was up all last night upset but can’t let my husband or teenage girls see me stressing.

Any help from someone or maybe you’ve been in same situation!!

Thanks C Fingers crossed

  • Hi  and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community, and although I've not been investigated for possible bowel cancer I know how scared you're probably feeling right now.

The online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join the bowel cancer group as you'll then connect directly with others who have been investigated for the same type of cancer.

To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't turn out to be cancer but you'll find plenty of support here if it does.

    ((hugs))

  • Hi  and welcome to the Macmillan community.

I’m sorry you are worried about the symptoms you are having, but it’s normal to be referred for a colonoscopy when a FIT test shows a number over 10. The FIT test is showing that there is some blood present, but is not a cancer diagnosis as this can be caused by other reasons such as polyps or Crohn’s disease for example.

It’s impossible for anyone here to say what the reason for your FIT test result is, and no-one here can speculate about whether or not it could mean cancer.

The community is divided into a number of different support groups, so I’d recommend you join the bowel group and make your post there. You’ll then be able to connect with others who are going through the same diagnostic tests, and be able to get support from others who know exactly how you’re feeling.

If you click on the link I’ve made below, then join the group by clicking on the banner going across the page, I’m sure you’ll get lots of help and support there. It’s a very active group with many helpful members.

It’s a good place to share your worries with people who understand, as I can understand you not wanting to worry your family. You’ll see lots of other posts in this group from members worried about FIT test results and colonoscopies.
