My sister has recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy and I'm just lost as to how to give support or choose the right words to say. I'm the youngest of all the siblings and have always been treated as the "baby" of the family, all the gossip and secrets and dramas/upsets were always kept from me to I guess "protect" my ears from upset. So over the years I guess it's made it hard for me to be open and talk about things with other people. Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this, I've only just joined the forums and a bit lost with everything.
Hi JBplusjb and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.
I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community, and although I was the one with cancer I know how a diagnosis can affect the whole family.
The online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you also join and post in the family and friends group as you'll then connect directly with others who have a loved one living with cancer.
To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.
You might also find this resource from Macmillan on supporting someone with cancer helpful and also this on how to talk to someone with cancer.
Sending ((hugs))
