Chemotherapy time spans.

Totally confused. I am having chemo for cancer and have completed seven cycles out of twelve. Treatment is supposed to be fortnightly but tends to vary between 14 and 16 days. What concerns me is my cycle eight which was due yesterday. This didn’t happen, and on querying why i was told they had a backlog of patients and as Monday is a bank holiday there will be no appointments until Tuesday, and in my case, Wednesday at the earliest. That will make my treatment 5 days late. Is this an treatment regime acceptable as it worries me.

  • I had 6 cycles of chemo (750hrs) along with my other treatments and had 2 of the 6 cycles delayed for a full week each time.

The first delay was due to infections and low blood counts with the other due to me having to travel South to see my next clinical team to set up my follow up treatment - the delays made no difference to my overall outcomes.

A cycle of treatment is a basic target and helps hospital scheduling…… but there is leeway built in for delays…..

I have sat beside many people in a ward who had every cycle delayed due to infections and low blood counts and ended up finishing treatment 6 weeks later than the set date.

  • Nice to read your reply Mike. Touch wood, none of my cycles have been interrupted due to illness or anything, purely timing issues. I did mention it to my clinician a while back and she said 2 or 3 days is fine, but not more which is what was concerning me. Anyway, thanks for your reply and keep well.
