Grandad has cancer and it looks like it has spread

My grandads has had prostate cancer a while now and up until recently it hasn't changed. I had a phone call to say it looks as if its spread up his spine, I just want to crumble. I just feel so sad and like nothing I do will help, he doesn't live close by so travelling is expensive. I sent him a gift box with goodies and I plan to visit him next week but I just want to stay there. I don't know what I am expecting typing all this, I think I just need to vent. I feel like I am grieving him before he has even gone, does that make sense. We used to send letters all the time until he learnt how to email and now he emails me all the time. I feel so close to him yet I'm so far away. Again I don't know what I'm expecting sorry

  • Hello ,

I'm very sorry to hear that your grandad has prostate cancer and there's a possibility it might now have spread.

I'd just like to reassure you that prostate cancer is very treatable, usually for long periods, even if it has spread.

For example, my own diagnosis was in 2016, I had treatment with intention to cure and life turned to normal. Fast forward to 2024 and the cancer returned. I had more treatment and am now on indefinite maintenance drugs. I am now incurable but treatable and am am living a pretty normal life. My wife and I travel quite extensively (we're currently in the Canary Islands) and plan to be in the USA for my 70th birthday later this year.

I'd suggest you join the prostate community and repost there. We have many members including ladies who are related to men with prostate cancer. You'll find plenty of reasurance and information there and I've included a link below.

    Best wishes,

    Derek.
