Anyone experienced this and it was Stil cancer? Trying to Tell myself it’s a Long wait so can’t be serious. Why do they Talk about care and treatment and bring someone?

  • Hello Imurray

I am sorry to hear that you have been told that it is a 5 week wait for your biopsy results. I can imagine that this is a worrying time for you and you just need to know. 5 weeks does seem a long time.

I wonder if it is worth giving the hospital a call and asking whether you could go on the list for a cancellation appointment. So if someone can not attend theirs for some reason- they could call you at short notice? Another thing to ask is whether you could be given a telephone appointment for the initial results and to follow it up with the face to face to discuss anything further. A number of my appointments were done via telephone, including diagnosis, post op results and oncology review during chemo.

Another thing I would be inclined to check is whether you were referred on a routine or urgent basis as that may make a difference.

Do give the Support Line a call if it would help to talk to someone. They may be able to also give further advice.

    Jane

  • Thanks Jane, I will contact the hospital.

What I find really frustrating is the Standard Terminologiy in the letter, care and treatment (makes it sound that there will be a plan), bringing Medication to the appointment and taking someone with you. Surely they could have a variety of options that are more appropriate.

I would assume Consultants time is Limited. Why would they need to be involved when all is fine. It is good practice in a way but the Stress and anxiety with this process overrides good practice

  • I know it is really stressful waiting for results. My post op results came back at around 3 1/2 weeks and in the end I kept emailing the consultants secretary- I then had a phone call from my surgeon himself who gave me a brief update. I was then called by my nurse the following day and then had a face to face appointment a couple of weeks later. I think if I hadn't followed it up I would have been waiting for a couple more weeks.

With your appointment it may be that they want to see you in person to go through a potential treatment- it may not be due to cancer being found but something else that needs treatment.

In my own experience once cancer had been found, they did move things on very quickly- I had a phone call the morning after an ultrasound to say something had been found. I was then called in for a biopsy and CT scan and had the results by phone within a week.

  • Hello I do hope that you get your result sooner than that. My partner was told he had cancer in January.  His treatment started on 22th March

I hope you get a better result.  Look after yourself

  • We waited for nearly 2 weeks after an x ray to be called in and told my husband had inoperable lung cancer stage 4. When we've met the nurses and oncologist they have been wonderful but you do feel in limbo for chunks of time.

    • My partner has stage 4 lung cancer. He is having immunotherapy.  Aren't they offering any treatment?
  • Yes they are but we haven't got a date yet. He's having chemo and immunotherapy.

  • Thats good they are offering you treatment.  I hope it goes well and he recovers soon.

  • I called back into the Hospital and spoke to the Consultant‘s secretary who said she would get someone to Call me back. The doc who did biopsy called that day to say no cancer & nothing to worry about. That saved 5 weeks of worrying myself sick. Thx for all your Feedback and good luck with your treatment going forward xx

  • Great news- I am really pleased they were able to call you back
