Palliative radiotherapy treatment

Hi all,

Looking for some help guidance from someone that has gone through this.

I have a SCC T4 on my tongue and my lymph nodes have also swollen on the RHS same side as my tumor.

I went for my CT scan and contrast dye to have my Mask made. I had a reaction to the contrast which has caused water retention in my legs badly swollen. I was asked to attend my first session of radiotherapy and when they went to fit the mask it was really tight as the lymph nodes were no where near the size it is now. As a result I ended up having a panic attack and couldn't proceed they agreed the mask was too tight and made arrangements on the same day to have a new mask made to which we have done. So I'm due back in there later today I'm wide awake stressing. Does anyone have any techniques to help the focus or get through the session in aware it's literally 5 minutes but just the thought of laying down on the plate again is really getting the better of me.

Cheers Chris

  • Hi Chris/ and a very warm welcome to the online community which I hope you'll find is both an informative and supportive place to be.

I’m Anne, one of the Community Champions here on the Online Community, and I'm sorry to read that you had a panic attack when you were about to start your radiotherapy.

The online community is divided into different support groups so I'm going to recommend that you join the head and neck cancer group as you'll then connect directly with others who have had the same treatment as you.

To join, just click on the link I've created and, once you've joined, you can start a new post in the same way as you did here and join in with existing conversations by clicking on 'reply'.

It would be great if you could put something about your diagnosis and proposed treatment into your profile as it really helps others when replying to you and also when looking for someone on a similar pathway. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
