Hello, I am very new here, and just came for some insight, or other experiences.
For the past 4 months I have been suffering with upper right abdominal pain, I put this off and put it down to other things, 2 weeks ago, I woke in the night to excruciating URQ pain, vomiting, high fever. I ended up in hospital, a blood test showed high infection markers. I was given antibiotics and told I had acute cholecystitis and likely have gallstones. An ultrasound was done and the surgeon told me there are no stones but I have a 12mm polyp which is not on a stalk? I have been referred to a surgeon for gallbladder surgery and they said they will test it for cancer cells. I am a little scared.
I am slightly concerned as I have symptoms which are not explained by gallstones, they told me it's likely the polyp.
How likely is it to be cancer, I don't seem to be able to find any information on this at all.
Thank you for anyone who can share anything.
Hi SunshineRae and welcome to Macmillan.
I’m sorry to read of your issues, and can sympathise with all your symptoms and pain, as I’ve been through something very similar and it’s horrible!
I also ended up in hospital, and a ct scan confirmed it was gallstones rather than a polyp so my situation was a little bit different to yours where the ultrasound has identified your polyp.
I ended up having my gallbladder out, and what I can tell you is that it is standard practice for anything removed to be tested for cancer but it doesn’t necessarily mean they expect cancer to be found. Many polyps are benign. When my pathology report came back, there was no evidence of cancer, but there was evidence that I’d suffered from repeated gallbladder attacks which had damaged my gallbladder. These attacks had caused pain, vomiting, high temperature and a bacterial infection which resulted in antibiotics in hospital via an IV.
None of us here are medically trained, and we can only speak about our own experiences, so it’s impossible to say what the chances of finding cancer are. I assumed that I did not have cancer, unless I was told otherwise, so was just glad to get the surgery done. I recovered well, and quickly, from my surgery and have had no issues since.
I hope you can try not to worry too much at this point and you don’t have too long to wait for your surgery.
Sarah xx
